Huge congratulations to our 2026 high school graduates! 🎉🥳

This year, 9 amazing students graduated from our HNH LEADS program and are now headed to awesome colleges and universities across the state and country, including: CT State Community College, Fairfield Bellarmine, University of Hartford, Western Connecticut State University, Wesleyan University, and Saint Louis University.

At our celebration, the seniors received sweatshirts from their colleges and read their college essays to their peers, discussing the many hardships they overcame both academically and in their personal lives to reach this incredible milestone. One student even noted how the HNH LEADS program was like a second family they didn't know they needed!

Please join us in celebrating our graduates!

Dr. Peter Ferrara is the Dentist of the Year! 🎉

Congratulations to Dr. Ferrara for earning this incredible award from the Bridgeport Dental Association CT!

Under Dr. Ferrara's care and leadership, and alongside our partners at the Fones School of Dental Hygiene, we're able to offer our neighbors free dental care right here at Hall Neighborhood House.

In addition to Hall Neighborhood House's Board of Director Dr. Ferrara being honored, Hall's Executive Director, Robert Dzurenda, received the Outstanding Citizen Award for the important work Hall does on the East Side of Bridgeport.

Thank you, Bridgeport Dental Association, for these incredible honors—and congratulations, Dr. Ferrara!

Thank you, Ms. Bruce! 🎉🎉

On May 15, we celebrated the retirement of Ms. Marie Bruce and honored her extraordinary 50-year career spent serving the Hall community.

To recognize her remarkable legacy, Hall presented Ms. Bruce with a watch and dedicated a new service award in her honor: The Marie Bruce Committed Service Recognition Award, which will recognize staff members who have devoted twenty or more years of service to Hall. She was also surprised with a proclamation from the Mayor’s Office declaring May 15 as Marie A. Bruce Day, in recognition of her decades of service to hundreds of Bridgeport families.

Ms. Bruce first came to Hall as a teenager participating in Hall’s teen programs, then returned as a college student through a social services job program. She was later officially hired, beginning a 50-year career in Family Services, where she provided financial assistance, guidance, and enrollment support to countless families.

Her family’s roots at Hall run deep. Her mother, aunt, sisters, and great-aunt all worked at Hall, while her two sons, along with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, attended, or still attend, Hall’s Early Learning and Youth Services programs.

What Ms. Bruce loves most about Hall is its enduring presence in the East Side community and the opportunity to see generations of families come through its doors. She understands the impact her work has had and often describes Hall as her “home away from home”, which made her decision to retire especially difficult.

Ms. Bruce leaves behind an extraordinary legacy of wisdom, advocacy, compassion, and persistence that will continue to inspire generations to come.

Please join us in celebrating Ms. Marie Bruce and wishing her a happy and well-deserved retirement!

Field trip! 🌱🌿

High school students in the HNH LEADS program visited the H. Smith Richardson Wildlife Preserve in Westport, CT, owned by The Connecticut Audubon Society.

Friend of Hall Jerid O'Connell gave students a tour and shared his journey of restoring the area with native plants and animals. He also encouraged students to set goals, be reliable, put themselves out there, and never give up. At the end of the tour, Mr. O'Connell gifted each student with a copy of "Nature's Best Hope" by Douglas W. Tallamy to start their "success library."

This trip gave students the opportunity to step outside of Bridgeport and relax after the stressful college decision-making process.

Thank you, Mr. O'Connell, for this incredibly special visit!

May is Mental Health Awareness Month—and your mental health matters!

Caring for your mental well-being is just as essential as visiting the doctor or dentist, and at Hall, we believe everyone deserves access to high-quality behavioral health support. That’s why we provide accessible resources to help our neighbors thrive—mentally and physically.

All year long, Hall Neighborhood House offers our neighbors support, a listening ear, fun activities, encouraging community, and behavioral health services in partnership with Southwest Community Health Center, Inc.

“Raising a child, it takes a village. And being a teacher means you’re a part of that village.”

Ms. Ana, our head teacher in B106, believes that family engagement is the foundation of success in the classroom. She knows how important it is for families to be involved in their children’s education, so she prioritizes communication and relationship-building to help everyone work together and support each child’s growth.

She chose to become an educator after a former teacher saw her potential and encouraged her to pursue Early Learning. And for the last 6 years, she has taught at Hall Neighborhood House, teaching in both the toddler and preschool rooms, including 3 years as a Head Teacher.

Her proudest moments as a teacher always come at graduation, which she helps plan every year. She loves watching her students receive their diplomas and reflecting on their journeys, knowing she was part of it. She also loves seeing former students return and seeing how much they’ve grown.

Being a teacher has taught her a lot, but the greatest lessons she’s learned are to value time and never take it for granted, to treat everything as a learning experience, and to remember that her role as a teacher is not to reinvent the wheel, but to make it better.

Join us in celebrating Ms. Ana and show her some love in the comments! ❤️
