Why does your brain seem to get quieter the moment you get on your horse?

For riders with ADHD, the saddle can sometimes feel like the one place where everything suddenly clicks.

The to-do lists. The unfinished thoughts. The constant mental noise.

Gone.

And while horseback riding isn't a cure for ADHD or a substitute for clinical treatment, researchers are beginning to explore why movement, sensory input, focus and the human-horse connection may help explain what so many riders have experienced for years.

Riding requires you to be present.

You have to notice your horse's movement. Adjust your balance. Respond to subtle changes. Make decisions in real time.

Your brain can't be everywhere else when you're communicating with a 1,000-pound animal.

Maybe that's part of the magic of the saddle.

Equestrians: Do you have ADHD, or have you noticed that riding seems to quiet your mind and improve your focus?

Tell us in the comments what you experience when you ride. If you'd like to read the full article, comment below so we can connect!

Dear Friends,

It is with a heavy heart that we have to share some sad news. Yesterday we had to say goodbye to Bologna after he was diagnosed with advanced melanomas that had spread internally. While it was an incredibly difficult decision, it was the kindest one his owners could make for him. He passed peacefully with his loved ones by his side.

Bologna was just such a good boy.

He never met a person he didn’t like, and he never seemed to have a bad day. He had the kindest heart and a way of making everyone around him feel comfortable and confident. He happily tolerated birthday hats, long grooming sessions, endless hugs from his riders, and all of the attention that came with being a therapy horse. He never seemed to mind. He simply showed up every day, ready to take care of his people.

His only bad habit was convincing new volunteers that he was far too old to walk any faster. He had perfected the art of the slow shuffle and could put on quite the performance when he thought he could get away with it. Those of us who knew him well knew it was all an act. If Bologna decided he wanted to move, he absolutely could; we just had to remind him from time to time.

Bologna gave so many of our participants the confidence to try something new. Because we trusted him so completely, many of our younger riders were able to ride independently for the very first time. For some of them, it was the first time they had ever experienced that kind of independence. Those are moments that they and their families will remember forever.

Although Bologna was only part of the EHTRC herd for the past two years, he made a lasting impact on our program, touching the lives of so many participants, volunteers, staff, and families. The barn already feels quieter without him.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll have a small memorial on his stall. If you’d like to leave a note, share a favorite memory, or simply spend a quiet moment remembering him, we hope you’ll do so.

One thing we ask is that if you happen to see any of our riders before their next lesson, please don’t mention Bologna’s passing. We’d like our instructors to share the news with each rider in a way that’s appropriate for them, and we’d also like to give parents the opportunity to talk with their child beforehand if they need help processing it.

Thank you all for loving Bologna so well during his time here. We were incredibly lucky to have had him as part of our herd. He leaves behind a space in our barn and in our hearts that simply can’t be replaced.

Our heartfelt condolences to his wonderful life long owners. There will never be another Bologna, and he will forever remain in our ♥️'s

Every great therapy horse starts as someone’s beloved horse. We’re looking for our next one.

Emerald Hollow Therapeutic Riding Center is looking to purchase another gentle, dependable gelding to join our herd and become an important partner in changing lives.

We’re searching for a gelding between 10 and 15 years old, standing 12 to 14 hands, who is sound, calm, patient, and exceptionally well-mannered. He should have excellent ground manners and be comfortable and confident at the walk, trot, and canter.

This special horse will join our therapeutic riding program, helping Children and Adults with disabilities, Veterans, and First Responders discover confidence, independence, healing, and hope through the extraordinary partnership between horse and human.

We’re looking to purchase the right horse and are prepared to pay a fair price for an exceptional match.

In return, he’ll receive a loving forever home, outstanding daily care from an experienced team, regular veterinary, farrier, dental, massage, and chiropractic care, ongoing training and enrichment, and a meaningful career where he’ll touch countless lives while being loved and cared for every step of the way.

If you know of a horse who might be the perfect fit, we’d love to hear from you. Please send us a message on Facebook or call us at 508-896-0064.

If you could share this post, we’d truly appreciate it. You never know where our next incredible therapy horse may be waiting.

Did you know that Latham Centers was the inspiration for Emerald Hollow Therapeutic Riding Center. They reached out to our founder, Nancy Sheridan, back in 2010 and have been riding with us ever since ♥️
