"In my nearly 30 years of working in the animal field, science has been uncovering the social and emotional life of animals and insects," says Miyako Kinosh*ta, Green Chimneys Assistant Director of Nature-Based Education. "...They communicate and speak with each other in ways that we humans do not understand. However, once we stop expecting animals to think and behave like humans, and instead attempt to understand and speak their languages, we start seeing their own communities, families, and social structure."

What does this study of the internal lives of animals reveal? How can it help us create the best home for animals in our care? Miyako explores the concept of "home" for animals: www.greenchimneys.org/news-events/concept-of-home/

Winter the goat enjoys an afternoon snack in the Open Paddock. Open Paddocks are available during day-time hours for Green Chimneys students and non-farm staff to easily spend time amongst the miniature horses, goats and sheep. It’s a calm experience and often a welcome break from the day, both for people and the animals who enjoy the extra attention.
