Check out and join Juneteenth Downeast's Annual Juneteenth Commemoration in Ellsworth on Friday, June 19!

"...a federal holiday in the United States. It is celebrated annually on June 19 to commemorate the end of slavery in the United States. The holiday's name, first used in the 1890s, is a portmanteau of June and nineteenth, referring to June 19, 1865, the day when Major General Gordon Granger ordered the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas at the end of the American Civil War." - Wikipedia

Through the Juneteenth Commemoration and the Weekend on the Water, we invite all people of color to come together with the larger Downeast community and engage with all that we have to give culturally, spiritually and communally.

We at MMCC were saddened to hear of the passing of Gerald Talbot of Portland, Maine - a stalwart for civil and human rights and the first Black legislator in Maine. Mr. Talbot was born in and grew up in Bangor where MMCC is based.

Our condolences go out to his family, including Senator Rachel Talbot Ross - a key ally in the struggle for immigrants' rights here in Maine.

Hundreds gathered in Portland to remember and celebrate Maine civil rights leader Gerald Talbot, who died at age 94.

The Maine Multicultural Center (MMCC) is pleased to officially announce the retirement of one of our founding members and very first Executive Director, Pam Proulx-Curry. This was a very much planned move and well deserved. (and we managed to convince her to stay on the board!)

We are also ecstatic to announce that our current Program Manager, Adrian Arias-Palomo, has agreed to come on as our Executive Director!

Please congratulate both Pam and Adrian - we couldn't have made it work out any better than this for a leadership transition!

Last Friday, May 15, we had a surprise celebration in honor of our first Executive Director and Founding Member, Pam Proulx-Curry, who is retiring this month (but staying on the board!) - held at the Unitarian Universalist Society of Bangor.

Below is a message from our Board Chair, Marwa Hassanien, on that night and some photos. Big shout out to board members Cassy Generlette, Kim Boucher, and Raph Okutoro for going above and beyond for the planning and ex*****on of the event. Thanks to all who made it happen (and know how to keep a secret!), and please wish Pam well in her retirement!

"Last night was so fun as we celebrated a true pillar of our community! I’ve known Pam for the past 10 years, and she has always led with so much generosity, courage, and an unwavering commitment to justice. She inspires so many of us to do better and be better!!

The room was filled to capacity with friends, neighbors, colleagues, and community members whose lives have been touched by Pam in one way or another. That is her legacy! ❤️

Happy retirement, Pam, and congratulations! Wishing you joy, rest, and LOTS of gardening in this next chapter. Thank you for always showing up for those who need it most!"

A wonderful post of gratitude and photos from our Board Chair, Marwa Hassanien, after attending Immigrant Legal Advocacy Project (ILAP)'s annual CeleSoirée last week with our staff members Adrian Arias-Palomo and Sarah Marx.

MMCC was honored this night along with wonderful compatriot organizations Furniture Friends, Empowered Immigrant Women Unite, Maine Solidarity Fund, and Trinity Jubilee Center. Thank you ILAP and all of the wonderful allies in Maine serving our immigrant communities in Maine!

"Wonderful evening at ILAP’s 16th annual CeleSoirée last night! Sarah, Adrian, and I represented the Maine MultiCultural Center after a full workday, and it was absolutely worth the late drive home. The room was PACKED with incredible attorneys, advocates, allies, and community members showing up for Maine’s immigrant communities in such meaningful ways. Ocean Gateway overlooking the water was absolutely stunning…my first time there and I loved it! Delicious food, great music, old friends, new connections in Portland, and a wonderful reminder of the power of community! ❤️ "
