12:00 pm Lunch and Learn
In person only

On Friday evening, Rabbi Danny Zemel and Liz Lerman will lead Shabbat service with musical accompaniment by David Halvorson (bass) and David Simonds (clarinet).

On Saturday, explore movement and prayer as art forms that support one another through an experiential workshop followed by a light lunch and moderated discussion with our distinguished
guests. Aaron Emery (percussion) will join our two Davids in providing musical accompaniment. No experience is required to participate in the workshop, and individuals across all faith
backgrounds are welcome.

Rabbi Danny Zemel led the congregation at Temple Micah in Washington, DC for over 40 years before retiring in June 2025. His 20-year involvement with Synagogue 2000 (a project focused on
the transformation of American synagogues) was instrumental in shaping his vision of synagogue life and the role of rabbi. He feels his primary role as rabbi is grappling with the challenge of “translating” the inherited Jewish past into a theology and practice that speak to today.

Liz Lerman is a choreographer, writer, educator, and recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and a MacArthur “Genius Grant.” She has been a long-time member of Temple Micah in Washington, D.C., where she has collaborated with the congregation and its rabbis; and she was a part of Synagogue 2000, where she introduced dance for congregational life to many in the United States. Over several years, she ran a program called Moving Jewish Communities, and she has also led communities of diverse faiths in suspending their differences to praise humanity’s shared creative beauty.

Their visit is made possible by generous support from the JCEA.

Mark May 8 on your calendar to see the amazing award- winning documentary The Other. This film takes us into the complex relationship of shared humanity, culture and connection between Israelis & Palestinians—and the transformative journey that follows when they are faced with meeting ‘the other’ amidst the difficulty of the conflict & occupation—providing an extraordinary example of what we are all capable of as humans. Filmed from 2017-2024, including post October 7th and during the subsequent war, The Other focuses on Israeli and Palestinian peace-builders, anti-occupation activists, artists, academics, ex-fighters, bereaved parents, and many more living the reality on the ground.

The screening will be at the Bangor Public Library on Thursday, 145 Harlow St. on May 8. Doors open with light refreshments at 5:30. Film begins at 6:00. The film is free and donations to cover the costs are most welcome.

The screening is sponsored by the Maine Jewish Film Festival and Keshev, a group of Maine Jews committed to working for a lasting peace in Israel and Palestine, in which both Israelis and Palestinians can live with full democratic and civil rights in peace, freedom, dignity, and safety.
