Rice Street Community Garden

Rice Street Community Garden Rice Street Community Garden, in Brevard, NC, near Asheville, donates its crops to the town's food bank and soup kitchen and is manned by volunteers.

The Rice Street Community Garden's goal is to produce fresh, organically grown, sustainable crops for the food-insecure population of Transylvania County. All of this community-based garden’s produce is donated to a Brevard food bank called Sharing House and a soup kitchen known as Bread of Life, helping to feed the needy of the town and county. The garden grew its first crops in 2012. By mid-Augu

st of its third year, RSCG had harvested and donated 1,729,5 pounds of produce, worth approximately $6.918 (based on a multiplier for organic produce developed by an Asheville-based organization called Gardens That Give). Fast distribution helps ensure that food-insecure households receive the freshest organic produce. Crops grown include asparagus, banana peppers, broccoli, bell peppers, butternut squash, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, collard greens, cucumbers, green beans, kale, lettuce (various varieties), okra, onions, peas, potatoes, radishes, summer squash, sweet potatoes, Swiss chard, turnips, and zucchini. The mission of Rice Street Community Garden is to be good stewards of one corner of God’s earth and to share His bounty with those who are most in need. From the tiniest seed, great things grow: community, fellowship, charity, gratitude, a sense of purpose, a sense of place.

A few scenes from late June and early July in the garden! The new tomato trellises are up, and we are harvesting fresh produce twice a week for our neighbors. We picked the first cherry tomatoes this week with MANY more to come. Join us Saturday, July 11, from 8-10 am -- new volunteers are always welcome! We can also use harvesting help next week.

We'll be harvesting and planting more on Monday 8-10 if you have time to help. The next workday will be Saturday, June 20, 8-10 am.

What a haul of fresh, delicious French radishes! A team of four harvesters dodged the rain showers this afternoon to get a bountiful batch of lettuce, kale, arugula, turnip greens, and radishes to share with our neighbors. Today's harvest will go to the Hunger Coalition of Transylvania County. Our next workday is this Saturday, 9 am-11 am. Come out and join us!
