If you’ve never heard of TMS therapy, save this post. It could change your life — or the life of someone you love.

TMS stands for Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation. Here’s what you need to know:

✦ WHAT IT IS
A non-invasive, FDA-cleared treatment that uses gentle magnetic pulses to activate the area of the brain linked to mood regulation.

✦ WHAT IT ISN’T
It’s not medication. It’s not surgery. It’s not electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). There are no systemic side effects — no weight gain, no drowsiness, no brain fog.

✦ HOW IT WORKS
You sit in a comfortable chair while a device delivers targeted magnetic pulses to the prefrontal cortex. Sessions are as short as 3–20 minutes. You can drive yourself home. You can go back to work.

✦ WHO IT HELPS
TMS is proven effective for major depression — including treatment-resistant depression, when medications haven’t worked. It’s also FDA-cleared for OCD and smoking cessation.

✦ THE RESULTS
→ 3 out of 4 patients experience significant improvement
→ ~50–60% of treatment-resistant patients respond
→ Many achieve complete remission
→ Benefits can last 6–12+ months

✦ COVERAGE
Most major insurance plans cover TMS, including Medicare.

Depression is not laziness.
Depression is not weakness.
Depression is not a choice.

It is a medical condition — one that affects an estimated 1 in 5 American adults right now. And it deserves medical treatment.

The stigma around depression keeps people from seeking treatment. The truth is: depression is treatable. And treatments like TMS therapy offer a path forward — without drugs, without surgery, without systemic side effects.

You are not alone. You are not weak. You deserve treatment that works.

depression care: access.

Our Patient Assistance Fund provides grants to TMS clinics, up to $1,500, to help cover costs like transportation, childcare, and lodging—so more patients can receive TMS therapy.

The need is urgent:
• 51M Americans are living with depression (Gallup, 2026)
• Rates have surged 60% in the past decade (CDC, 2025)
• TMS helps 3 out of 4 patients — yet access remains unequal.

As board member Martha B. Koo, M.D., LFAPA, FASAM, FCTMSS states, "I've seen patients delay treatment because they had challenges with transportation, lodging or childcare. The FACTMS Patient Assistance Fund removes all of those obstacles."
