Music Creators North America (MCNA) has been joined by songwriter and composer groups around the world in calling for transparency on the deals being announced between major labels and Generative AI corporations.

To date, no detail has been disclosed on how these agreements could impact the ingestion of copyrighted works by large language models or affect the fair remuneration of creators upon whose work the GenAI industry is being built. Transparency is the fundamental first step towards an equitable solution of this complex challenge.

Last year, the UK government approved a text and data mining exemption on the use of copyrighted works “for all purposes” including commercial applications. Rights holders were not able to opt-out of the exception and it gave a green light for digital developers and AI platforms to learn from creators’ works without the need for a license.

Yesterday however, member of parliament Sarah Olney led a successful debate on this issue that persuaded the UK government to change its decision. The result is that these plans will be "halted, pending further consultation”.

Music Creators North America are proud to support this movement in favour of music creators. There's much more to come on this crucial story and the future of AI in the creative industry.

“1/ The Government's 'text and data mining' exception to UK copyright law would have left those in creative industries without legal control over their work, should it have been used by an AI platform. I therefore held a debate today to highlight the importance of this issue.”
