Ty Elder - Athlete - Water Polo & Swimming
Ty Elder was a driving force within Heritage High School’s aquatics program from 2008 to 2012, distinguishing
himself through exceptional commitment, leadership, and athletic achievement. His career reflects steady
growth, relentless work ethic, and elite performance in both water polo and swimming.
Water Polo
Ty’s rise in water polo began as a freshman in 2008–2009, when he earned JV “Most Improved.” As a
sophomore, he became a Varsity starter, received the Coaches Award, earned Second Team All-BVAL honors as
a goalie, and recorded 204 saves. His junior season Ty was named Team MVP, earned First Team All-BVAL
recognition, and set a single-season school record with 328 saves as goalkeeper. In his senior year, Ty delivered
one of the most accomplished seasons in program history. He again earned Team MVP, First Team All-BVAL,
and was named BVAL League MVP. He was selected to the Pacific Zone Senior All-Star Team and finished his
Heritage career as the school’s all-time leader in saves with 806, a record that still stands.
Swimming
Ty brought the same discipline and dedication to swimming. As a sophomore, he earned Varsity “Most
Improved.” During his junior year he served as a team captain. His senior year, he once again was a team
captain, received the Varsity “Dedication, Desire, Inspiration” Award and capped his season with a secondplace finish in the 500 Freestyle at the BVAL Championships. That year, he was also named Heritage High
School’s Scholar Athlete of the Year.
After graduating, Ty attended Penn State University–Behrend. As a water polo player he became one of the
most accomplished goalkeepers in program history, setting the all-time save record (760), the single-season
save record (325), and the all-time steal record (180). He earned All-American Honorable Mention, and served
as team captain. Ty was also a Varsity swimmer throughout his collegiate career. Ty graduated with a degree in
Electrical Engineering and a minor in Computer Engineering.
Ty has continued to give back to the sport through coaching with the University of Arizona Club Team as
Women’s Assistant Coach (2016–2017), Women’s Head Coach (2017–2021), and Men’s Assistant Coach (2024–
2025). He is also a founding member and coach of the Tucson Water Polo Club, the only youth water polo
organization in southern Arizona.
The Liberty Union High School District Athletic Hall of Fame is honored and proud to induct Ty Elder into the
Hall of Fame for his outstanding athletic career at Heritage High and Penn State University–Behrend.
