On Monday evening, the City Commission appointed 21 residents to serve on the city’s 2040 Plan Advisory Committee. This new working group will help establish Brentwood’s priorities for growth and development over the next 15 years.

“We want this plan to be relevant, and we want this plan to reflect our community as accurately as possible,” Brentwood Mayor Nelson Andrews said.

In February, the city hired McBride Dale Clarion, a planning and zoning consulting firm, to update Brentwood’s comprehensive plan, known as the 2040 Plan. As part of that update, the firm asked the city to establish an 18-person working group, divided into three subcommittees – Business, Quality of Life, and Transportation.

More than 70 residents applied for the committee, listing their subcommittee preference in their application. The City Commission initially planned to appoint six individuals to each subcommittee, but the number of strong applications made their decision difficult. More than 40 individuals applied for the Quality of Life Committee, prompting the Commission to increase that group’s size to nine members.

“Quality of life is public safety, recreation, taxes, how you pay for all this stuff,” Commissioner Anne Dunn said. “It’s the library, green space; it’s a big topic, and I think we need more than six people, and we’ve got some jewels here.”

After several rounds of voting, taking more than an hour, the commission appointed the following individuals to the 2040 Plan Advisory Committee:

Business:
• William Baylor
• John Dollarhide
• Randy Gibson
• Robert Ikard
• Michael Kaplan
• Kelly Tamberino

Transportation:
• James Calcote
• James Davis
• Chad Grout
• William Hudson
• Andrew Rittler
• Brad Waldschmidt

Quality of Life:
• Jonathan Derek Bell
• Chris Cummins
• J. Tod Fetherling
• Mohana Karlekar
• Jirong Long
• Jake Martin
• Scott Matlock
• Lauren Siebel
• Lindsay Rivera

The 2040 Plan Advisory Committee will meet five times throughout the summer and fall at Brentwood City Hall, 5211 Maryland Way, in the second-floor annex room. The committee’s meetings are open to the public, and are the following Wednesdays at 6 pm: May 20, June 24, Aug. 19, Sept. 16, and Oct. 21.

Citizens for Brentwood Green Space held its 2026 Annual Meeting this week and elected new officers: Gil Hutchinson (President), Joe Harkins (VP), Kelli Nelson (Treasurer), and Dave Kumatz (Secretary). The Board celebrated recent milestones, including the Windy Hill Park grand opening and Greenspace’s $150,000 contribution, updates to the Butterfly Garden, and the planting of the George Malo memorial tree. We’re also tracking early discussions in the city’s 2040 Plan, especially future ideas for Smith Park and trail connections.

Our redesigned website, brentwoodgreenspace.org, is now live, and we’re continuing to strengthen our social media presence. Greenspace will host a table at Arbor Day on March 28, 2026.

We’re also excited to welcome Kim Mueller back to the Board! Kim brings deep journalism, community service, and nonprofit experience, along with a passion for local parks, hiking, and education.

New park opens tomorrow!

10:00 am - Windy Hill Park

11/28/2025

The City of Brentwood is set to open its 15th park this December, giving residents another space to enjoy scenic views, walking trails, and a children’s playground.

“We are excited because Dec. 13 is the grand opening and ribbon cutting for Windy Hill Park, and that will be a wonderful event,” City Commissioner Kim Gawrys said during a recent commission meeting. “Hopefully the weather will cooperate.”

The short ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. that Saturday at the park’s front entrance, located at 9133 Old Smyrna Road. The 52-acre passive park, originally conceived as part of the Brentwood 2030 Plan, will serve more than 1,900 homes and residents in the northern section of the city.

The land was previously part of Wilbur and Lucy Sensing’s Windy Hill Farm. Wilbur used this flat field as a runway for his single-engine airplane. In 2020, the Sensings sold this portion of their farm to Brentwood for the creation of the new city park.

The couple released a statement at the time, saying, “We have enjoyed the pastoral beauty of Windy Hill for the past 45 years and now are thankful it will be preserved for all to enjoy.”

The city is making sure the land’s aviation history will live on with an airplane-themed playground and a mural depicting one of Sensing’s former planes. The mural, part of a recent Leadership Brentwood project, will be painted by artist Eric “Mobe” Bass on a building that once served as Wilbur’s airplane hangar.

In addition to the mural and the playground, the park will feature a trail connected to Brentwood’s greenways, a 400-meter loop track, workout stations, picnic shelters, restrooms, and parking at the north and south entrances.
