This Saturday Beth Holmberg will be teaching how to make a hot cut chisel. This is a great class for those learning to smith. Also, for those working towards their NEB Level 1 Certification you will learn skills to get signed off on after the class.

I feel the need to share this obit of a great blacksmith and craftsman. David Court was a founding member of New England Blacksmiths, He was known around the world in the smithing community as a man with vision. He was part of the revival in the 70s and an inspiration for generations of Smiths, including myself. It is hard to greave for a man that would declare, "don't mourn my passing, celebrate my life" That I will do. RIP David Court. I do have one story to pass along. There are others but this one characterizes David and Smiths every where. For many years Dave and a fellow Smith I won't mention here would attend Artist Blacksmith's Association of North America - ABANA conferences and one or the other would sign up for the event and list the other as their spouse. It was cheaper that way. They split the total and no one noticed, for years, many years!
Raise a glass and celebrate the man and the legend.

Obituary
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of David A. Court, age 78, a beloved husband, father, and dedicated craftsman, who left this world on March 9, 2026. Born on September 17, 1947, in Beverly, Massachusetts, David's journey began in a small town, where his passion for blacksmithing ignited at the tender age of 20 while working at his parents' home in Maine. From that moment on, forging metal became not just his occupation, but his life's calling.

David was a self-employed blacksmith, a true artisan whose dedication to his craft resonated through each piece he created. His work was a labor of love, reflecting his deep appreciation for the traditions of forging-a testament to his unwavering commitment and skill. Throughout the years, his master's touch turned raw materials into stunning creations that embodied strength and beauty, just like the man himself.

He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 54 years, Nancy Court, and his cherished daughter, Jessica Court.

David was preceded in death by his parents: Philip and Barbara (Dunn) Court.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, March 13, 2026 at 10:00 AM at Temple Beth Jacob, 67 Broadway in Concord. Burial will follow the service at 11:30 AM in Beth Jacob Cemetery.

As we bid farewell to David A. Court, we take comfort in the lasting impressions he left on our lives and the indelible mark he made through his passions. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered.

I would hope that it is obvious but in case it's not the Gilbert Forge in Brentwood NH still is buried in snow. What a winter we have had. Probably not over yet either. That being said we will not be opening for the 2026 season the second Sat. in March.
Right now the first session is scheduled for March 28th. Unless you see something here to the contrary we'll see you then

There were four different demonstrations set up on Saturday. It offers a way for crafters to get out of their own forge.

Hey, gang! The last session for 2nd Saturday classes at NEB Gilbert Forge is coming right up! If you are coming, know the following:
-It’ll be a harder project- on the intermediate cusp, with more to learn. Expect to need to take good notes, and a single long demo starting at 9 am. There might not be a handout.

Bring a cold chisel, center punch, loose glove for your non-hammer hand, hit cut chisel, and round punch (if you have them). Remember to wear lots of fire safe layers (long underwear, holey wool sweater, wool hat… not a fleece or puffer!) and maybe a warm drink. Hope to see you there!
