Juneteenth is a celebration of the end of slavery as we knew it in the United States. Our quilt square logo is actually inspired by those who were fighting against slavery during that time. During the Underground Railroad, it is said that slaves fleeing for their freedom would know which homes were a safe refuge by the types of quilts hanging on their porches.

We are now fighting against modern day slavery, s*x trafficking. The Covering House is a safe refuge for youth fleeing from that terrible situation. Each youth receives their own quilt when they arrive at our residential home, which is both symbolic and provides them with comfort and security.

Welcome back to our Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills series! Today our post is about Distress Tolerance. These skills are helpful when we consider the reality that life is dysregulating and painful at times. It would be unkind to ourselves and others if we didn't recognize this.

In distress tolerance, skills are meant to help us navigate the emotional pains of life and manage crises without engaging in harmful behavior. These skills don't ignore that life happens but rather equip us to handle things when they arise.

ACCEPTS
Activities: Engage in activities that bring pleasure/enjoyment (art, music, reading)
Contributing: Do something kind of yourself or others
Comparisons: Consider someone else's situation or a time when things were going better for you.
Emotions: Choose activities that evoke different emotions (if sad, watch a comedy)
Pushing away: Taking a break from the moment through distraction
Thoughts: Keep your mind busy with things that require concentration (puzzles, games, etc)
Sensations: Choose activities that engage your sense (taking a hot shower, grounding, soothing sounds, intense flavor)

This skill is not meant to solve deeper problems but rather provide a distraction for your nervous system to regulate so that you can handle the situation. See a list of activities that may help! Which one are you going to try?

We already knew she was a woman of achievement, but now it's "official!" Congratulations to our Board President, Pam Stanfield, for being honored as one of the 2026 Women of Achievement. TCH Director of Development, Founder/CEO, and board member were there to celebrate at the luncheon recently.

Since 1955, the Women of Achievement Award has recognized and honored the achievement of women who, through their volunteer efforts, have demonstrated their dedication and commitment to improving the quality of life in the St. Louis community.

"After a career as a teacher, principal, and university professor, Dr. Pamela M. Stanfield, chose to continue her life’s work in a more personal way. She now shows up for young people who need it most. As a volunteer citizen deputy juvenile officer, she spends Sunday afternoons at the St. Louis County Juvenile Detention Center sitting with youth, listening, and building trust through steady presence.

She also serves as president of the board of The Covering House, which provides refuge and restoration for children who have experienced s*xual exploitation or trafficking. A published author, Pam’s books reflect on her decades in education and mentorship with honesty and insight. Across every role, she offers consistency, respect, and encouragement to young people whose lives have been shaped by hardship."

Our girls love spending some of their free time making crafts! How cute are these!

It is often therapeutic for them to make something with their hands. Tactile tasks can really help us get out of our heads. What is something that grounds you?

Today is Higher Education Day. Education is such an important tool for success and one we especially try to provide for the girls in our care. Not only do we help them on their journey to complete their middle or high school education, but we try our best to help them prepare for their next milestone. In fact, one of our former clients graduated from college just weeks ago! A few of our staff were honored to be able to attend her ceremony. She is one of many success stories that are made possible thanks to your support.

In exactly one week, our girls will be attending prom! For some, it will be their first ever prom, not only with us, but just in general! We are so honored to host this event for them. If you would like to help make the night extra special for them, you can use the link to donate towards the purchase of flowers and makeup. The flowers will fill the space with beauty, and the makeup will be a fun way for the girls to express themselves and boost their confidence!

Please let us know your donation is specifically towards prom by leaving a comment! To add a comment, when you are first choosing the donation amount, you click "donation options" and then click "add a comment."

Thank you!

One of our girls recently celebrated her birthday while in our care! We are so blessed to be able to celebrate these special milestones with them. Their favorite part of the celebration tends to be the meal and desserts. Whose isn't, right?

When you donate to our grocery fund using the link below, these are some of the meals you are helping to provide. You are giving a girl who may have never had one before, a birthday cake. And, in this case, cookies!
