God’s Power Gives Us the Ability to Live Godly Lives

3 God’s divine power has given us everything we need for life and for godliness. This power was given to us through knowledge of the one who called us by his own glory and integrity.

4 Through his glory and integrity he has given us his promises that are of the highest value. Through these promises you will share in the divine nature because you have escaped the corruption that sinful desires cause in the world.

Don’t Ride the Ride Alone

Rejoicing in hope; enduring in troubles; continuing steadfastly in prayer; contributing to the needs of the saints; given to hospitality. - Romans 12:12-13

Have you ever gone whitewater rafting?

To be sure, there can be great joy when floating down some quick rapids on a river, dodging rocks, descending and ascending with the flow of the water.

But there’s also a sense of terror.
Few are ever seriously injured or actually perish on such rides — but some do.

The few fatal exceptions just drive home the point: the peril is always present. The ride wouldn’t be the same without it.

So, while you may be laughing joyously with the person sitting next to you one moment, the next, you may be clinging tightly to a hand or a hand-hold in an effort to feel safe.

Such are the joys and perils of life. Life is full of ups and downs, twists and turns. It has its thrills and also its moments of terror.

God knows this. That’s why He prescribes that we join a community of believers to share the ride with us.

God uses us to comfort those who are hurting — just as He guides others to comfort us when we need it.

Find your “faithful friends.” There is no reason to ride the ride alone!

How can I take a leap of faith and invite others to join me?

Today’s Prayer:

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. - Matthew 5:6, NIV

Dear Lord, with You in my life, I know I will never be alone.

Thank You for both Your guidance and for the fellowship with others in the faith.

Spiritual Hyssop

Purify me with hyssop, and I will be clean. Wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. - Psalm 51:7

Hyssop is an aromatic plant, a strong smelling mint, commonly grown and used in Israel.

Throughout Hebrew law, hyssop was required in many of the purification ceremonies, including cleansing from leprosy and purifying oneself after exposure to a dead body.

A sprig of hyssop was the tool that brushed the lamb’s blood over the doorposts the night of the first Passover.

Hyssop cleaned. Hyssop purified. Hyssop saved the people from the Angel of Death.

All the ceremonies the law required taught the children of Israel that God demanded purity in His presence.

Things had to be clean. People had to be clean. They had a tradition of 613 commandments to follow to keep themselves clean.

Of course, it was nearly impossible. They were bound to sin in some way.

The psalmist realized that the only way to be truly clean was to get God involved.

Purity was not something people could attain or maintain on their own. God is needed to wash out our inner dirt, our wrong desires, our bad feelings, our unclean heart.

Jeremiah 17:9 reads “the heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it?”

Even when we think we’re doing well, we probably need a spiritual path. We need spiritual hyssop. We need Jesus.

How can I make sure that my spiritual heart is purified?

Today’s Prayer:

But now, this is what the Lord says - he who created you, Jacob, he who formed you, Israel: “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.” - Isaiah 43:1-2, NIV

Dear Jesus, Please cleanse me of everything that stains my soul with sin.

I invite You to purify every aspect of my life. I want to be clean and holy for You. Amen!!!
