The Fortnightly Club

The Fortnightly Club Promotes literacy through reading and supports Nancy Carol Roberts Memorial Library. They met each fortnight to study topics such as history and the arts.

The Fortnightly Club was established in 1895 by a group of women who shared a common interest in learning. Ultimately, the club became a member of the Texas Federation of Women and the General Federation of Women. In 1901, the Fortnightly Club opened a public library in Brenham, Texas to share their love of learning with the community. The library remains the major project and, through the club departments, support 12 others.

What a celebration today as the club closed out our 2025-2026 year at our Spring Luncheon hosted by the International Department! We presented a check to the Nancy Carol Roberts Memorial Library for $35,000! Mayor Atwood Kenjura gave a few remarks along with librarian Tammy Murphy giving an update on all the wonderful things going on at the library. We thanked our outgoing board members led by Phyllis Glasscock and welcomed our new board led by Kathryn Hawkins Seifert. And we honored our Bookhouse Babes and our volunteer of the year Debbie Schmitz for all their hard work. But we really must thank all our members for their many, many volunteer hours to make this donation to the library possible. As we break for the summer, the Bookhouse Babes will continue to be hard at work receiving donations, sorting, cleaning, pricing, and boxing the books for next year's sale. Have a great summer!

Invest a little time learning how to join in with clubs and organizations in our community to help others. Come to the Library Wednesday from 2pm until 4pm to visit and find out what is going on at the various booths and learn about their outreach work. Although our focus today is on opportunities for women, many can also include men and families.
