From DNR:
Thank you for your interest and concern about the recently enacted seasonal restriction on motorized trail riding in Green Mountain State Forest. We appreciate your comments and your engagement with DNR.

First and foremost, we’d like to acknowledge the lack of thorough communication about this closure and the impact that it is having on motorized users of Green Mountain State Forest trails. DNR is committed to collaborating and working with user groups on the issues facing DNR-managed lands, and in this instance, we fell short of that goal and apologize.

As a result, this closure is no longer in effect as was seen on posted signage. Signage will be removed by 09/04/2026. The closure will be paused so South Puget Sound Region management is able to further engage with representatives from your user group to better understand the impact of the closure on your access and recreation abilities.

DNR has faced a challenging budget environment over the last few years, including a 25% funding reduction to the Recreation Program, and elimination of funding for Washington Conservation Corps 6-person crews which previously maintained the Green Mountain State Forest Trails that you know and love. Motorized trail use in winter months can damage the trail soil bed and requires more staff time, materials, and equipment to repair, and with less staff support and funding, this closure was identified to help reduce ongoing trail degradation and environmental impacts to our state’s clean water.

DNR’s Recreation Program and South Puget Sound Staff will be following up in the coming weeks with more opportunities to voice your concerns about the proposed restriction. We look forward to having thoughtful conversations and working together to find ways to improve trail conditions and manage resources effectively.

Thank you again for taking the time to reach out to DNR and express your concerns. We will be back in touch soon and are eager to collaborate on solutions moving forward.

“Thanks to the collective response from the dirt biking community - individuals, NMA Charter Clubs, and advocacy orgs - the DNR is reversing the seasonal closure to moto at Green Mountain. Some folks are beginning to rally up on some trail work and the NMA is stoked to support those efforts. Contacting Bremerton Cruisers Motorcycle Club, Tacoma Motorcycle Club, River City Motorcycle Club, or volunteer .org are good ways to get connected. If you have a group that wants to jump in, any of those are great contacts or just hit the email. It’s really cool seeing our user group coming together to make this change. The DNR has posted new rules at Green Mountain State Forest restricting motorcycles to June 1–August 31 only. Motorized trail riding is now prohibited September 1–May 31.

Green Mountain has historically been open to motorcycle riding year-round, so this is a huge loss of riding access.

A lot of us want answers about how this decision was made. What public outreach was done before eliminating nine months of motorcycle access? Were local riders and motorcycle clubs consulted? What data or trail conditions justify this restriction? And who actually approved the change?

Instead of just being pi**ed off on Facebook, let's make sure DNR hears from us.

Contact the Washington DNR South Puget Sound Region, which manages Green Mountain:

📞 360-825-1631
📧 [email protected]

DNR Recreation can also be contacted at:

📞 360-902-1600
📧 [email protected]

When you contact them, be respectful, but ask some direct questions:

• Who authorized the June 1–August 31 riding season?
• What was the justification and what data supports it?
• When and how were riders and motorcycle clubs given an opportunity to comment?
• Was the Green Mountain/Tahuya Recreation Plan formally changed?
• How can riders formally challenge or request reconsideration of this decision?
• Will DNR meet with the motorcycle community before continuing this restriction?

Please don't turn this into motorcycles vs. hikers, horses or mountain bikes. That's not the issue.

The issue is losing nine months of motorcycle access to public land and making sure the people who actually ride, volunteer and maintain these trails have a voice when decisions like this are made.

CALL. EMAIL. SHARE THIS.

If you've ridden Green Mountain, raced there, worked a trail party there, or simply care about keeping riding areas open in Washington, DNR needs to hear from you.

Complaining to each other won't change anything. Hundreds of riders contacting DNR might.

Keep Green Mountain open to responsible motorcycle recreation.
