Olympic Mountain Rescue

Olympic Mountain Rescue Olympic Mountain Rescue is a volunteer organization dedicated to saving lives through rescue and mountain safety education. St. Helens to Mt. Baker.

OMR is one of nine Mountain Rescue Association units that operate in Washington State. Collectively, OMR members have hundreds of years of mountaineering experience in the Olympics. We are a skilled group of volunteer climbers dedicated to wilderness rescue and safety education. Our Purpose
We specialize in search and rescue operations in rugged wilderness areas involving high angle rock, snow an

d ice. We also provide technical expertise for search and rescue on rivers, canyons, heavy timber, brush and aircraft searches. Though most of our work takes place on the Olympic Peninsula, many times, we operate in conjunction with other Washington state rescue units along the Cascades, from Mt. Our Mission
In addition to rescue work, we actively promote back country safety. In particular, we participate in educational seminars of interest to the outdoor community, help local schools with mountaineering programs, distribute a variety of safety brochures and show outdoor safety films to interested groups. We also authored the "Climber's Guide to the Olympic Mountains," published by the Mountaineers.

MASON COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE – MEDIA RELEASE

Today, the Mason County Sheriff’s Office responded to a Search and Rescue incident on Mt. Washington involving an injured hiker who had reportedly fallen from a cliff area.

After receiving additional information regarding the subject’s injuries, which included reported head and hip injuries, rescue efforts were coordinated to ensure the safest and most effective response due to the difficult terrain and nature of the injuries. Olympic Mountain Rescue responded and assisted with rescue operations on the mountain. Due to concerns regarding the subject’s condition and the terrain involved, a request was also made through State Emergency Operations for helicopter assistance. The subject was ultimately successfully rescued by the US Navy Whidbey Island helicopter crew and transported from the mountain for medical care.

The Mason County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank Olympic Mountain Rescue, the US Navy Whidbey Island helicopter crew, State EOC personnel, and all responding resources involved in the successful rescue effort.

Yesterday OMR was called out to High Steel Bridge. A man had gone after his drone, slid down the steep embankment beneath the bridge, and couldn't get back up on his own. He was uninjured after the slide but quickly realized he wouldn't be able to climb back out. He then called 911 for help. The Mason County Sheriff's Office dispatched Mason County Search & Rescue to the scene as well as OMR for a technical rope rescue.

Ten of our members responded to rig and run a twin tension system to bring him back up. Uninjured and home safe.

Grateful for everyone who turned out and an incredible job by all teams involved for what turned out to be a multi-faceted technical rescue.

Quick PSA while we're here: the canyon below the bridge is closed, and for good reason. The terrain looks hikeable from above. It really isn't. It's steep, loose, unforgiving, and it's taken lives before.

Enjoy this place. Just please enjoy it from the bridge. :)

Today is the Kitsap Community Foundation Kitsap Great Give!

If you've ever been out in the Olympics and thought "man, I hope nothing goes wrong out here," we're the ones who show up when it does.

Olympic Mountain Rescue is nearly 80 volunteers of volunteers who train year round to be ready when someone is lost, injured, or stranded in the backcountry. Middle of the night, middle of a storm, multi-day searches in some of the most rugged terrain in Washington.

There's something pretty special about a group of people who will drop everything, leave warm beds in the middle of the night, take time off work, and head into weather that's not exactly ideal for a hike (to put it mildly) to help bring someone home safe. No one gets paid. We do it for the love of these mountains, for the community we've built around them, and for every person who gets to experience them. That's what this team does. And we've been doing it for nearly 70 years.

We're 100% donation funded. Every piece of gear, every rope, every training resource comes from people who believe this work matters. If you're able to contribute today, even a little bit, it goes a long way.
