If it seems like the family tree of fungi is being steadily redrawn, one reason is the endless work of Harte Singer, a California-based expert in mushroom genetics.
Harte — the sequencing director of the Fungal Diversity Survey — is responsible for extracting and analyzing the genetic sequences, the “barcodes,” of mushrooms submitted by amateur and professional mycologists across North America. He contributes to other projects as well; he did the on-site sequencing for 500 species at the 2024 NAMA foray in Gifford Pinchot National Forest.
He will be our guest presenter via Zoom for our June 11 meeting.
Analysis of genetic sequences helps mycologists better distinguish different species from each other and to regroup them at the genus and family levels. Harte will talk about barcoding techniques and discuss some of the fascinating discoveries of the FUNDIS project.
Come join us in person at the Rotunda (building 11) at Olympic College, Bremerton at 7 PM. Or join us via Zoom!
