The Friends of Hog Island is a small but mighty nonprofit whose entire mission is to make sure this magical and transformative place continues to exist and thrive.
Since 2011, we have contributed a minimum of $50,000 every single year to support camp operations. But beyond that annual commitment, we’ve stepped up for the big moments too — raising the Queen Mary building to protect it from rising seas and storms, adding solar panels to offset the camp’s electrical use, and rushing emergency funds here after the 2024 winter storm that took out the boathouse.
This summer alone, more than 100 FOHI volunteers will give thousands of hours to this island — maintaining buildings and supporting the kitchen staff.
We’ve also helped build something for the long term: an endowment for Hog Island, held by National Audubon, that has now grown to over $1.3 million. Each year, the camp can draw roughly $50,000 in dividends from it — making our true financial contribution well over $90,000 a year.
Today, we presented National Audubon with a check for $50,000 on the first night of Field Ornithology and Coastal Maine Bird Studies for Teens Camp with Scott Weidensaul, Sara Morris, and Anthony Hill, three of our board members, as instructors.
Hog Island Camp has just reached its 90th year. We believe that because of the FOHI community, it will see another 90.
