The Friends of Hog Island is a small but mighty nonprofit whose entire mission is to make sure this magical and transformative place continues to exist and thrive.

Since 2011, we have contributed a minimum of $50,000 every single year to support camp operations. But beyond that annual commitment, we’ve stepped up for the big moments too — raising the Queen Mary building to protect it from rising seas and storms, adding solar panels to offset the camp’s electrical use, and rushing emergency funds here after the 2024 winter storm that took out the boathouse.

This summer alone, more than 100 FOHI volunteers will give thousands of hours to this island — maintaining buildings and supporting the kitchen staff.

We’ve also helped build something for the long term: an endowment for Hog Island, held by National Audubon, that has now grown to over $1.3 million. Each year, the camp can draw roughly $50,000 in dividends from it — making our true financial contribution well over $90,000 a year.

Today, we presented National Audubon with a check for $50,000 on the first night of Field Ornithology and Coastal Maine Bird Studies for Teens Camp with Scott Weidensaul, Sara Morris, and Anthony Hill, three of our board members, as instructors.

Hog Island Camp has just reached its 90th year. We believe that because of the FOHI community, it will see another 90.

🇺🇸 On this Memorial Day, we want to pause to remember and honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. We are grateful for their sacrifice.

What a meaningful first full day of camp! 🐦‍⬛🪺

This week, participants will explore the wonders of spring migration across two of Maine’s most breathtaking landscapes — Hog Island and Monhegan Island. There is truly no better classroom.

Two special FOHIs were hard at work this winter… at their sewing machines! Be sure not to miss the beautiful new curtains in the Porthole and Queen Mary when you visit the island this year, thanks to Nancy Dickinson and Rosy’s mom, Maureen. And wait until you see the incredible new puffin costumes, which I’m sure will make lots of appearances this summer!

Hog Island Audubon Camp has been connecting people to nature through residential camps since 1936. The camp’s founding leadership believed that by helping campers, specifically teachers, develop a sustained interest in the natural world, they would go on to support wildlife and natural resource conservation. Join us in August as we cheers to 90 years, celebrate the camp’s legacy, and pay homage to those who’ve been integral to the camp’s success. Visit the Hog Island website to learn more.

Wow! We are basically full for all camp weeks this summer! Thank you to everyone for their enthusiasm to volunteer for a full week. We do still have space during the week of May 30-Jun 5. And we are always looking for local folks that can come for a meal, but especially those willing to help turn over camp on Fridays. Reach out to Adam at [email protected] to let him know you’d like to lend a hand!

The Friends of Hog Island is seeking enthusiastic volunteers to support this year’s season at the renowned Hog Island Audubon Camp in Bremen. Located just a short boat ride off the coast in Muscong…
