Leroy Hochstetler (now deceased) first opened the Rentown Country Store in Bremen in 1987 with one shelf of product. Today, Dennis runs the store with his wife. In 2015, the decision was made to expand the store across the street to facilitate the number of people coming to visit the store.

“We added o

n four times until the county said we can’t add on anymore,” Dennis explains. “[In 2015], we built the new store where it is now, and we’ve just been going from there.”

The rich family history stretches back before the store opened, with Dennis’ grandfather and his friend coining the name “Rentown” in the 1950s and 60s. The men were well-known for being involved in the community after their retirement, spending time out and around the town.

“In the Pennsylvania Dutch language, ‘rum-renna’ means ‘getting about,’” Dennis says. “These two neighbor guys were always going here and there, and they said if we don’t watch us, people are going to call us Rentown.”

Today, the store is known as a magnificent hub for fresh produce, deli meats and cheeses. Dennis and his wife prioritize supporting local farmers and selling it in their shop. Currently, they are selling product from four growers within a 10-mile radius. Their main focus, though, is their meats and cheeses.

“Four years ago, I went through my invoices and added up all the cheese we sold, and it was a little more than two tons of cheese,” he says. “We always try to keep the freshest cheese in Northern Indiana and the lowest price.”

The Marshall County Central Dispatch Center received a 911 call at 8:01 a.m. on Wednesday, April 9, regarding a vehicle collision resulting in personal injury.

The Marshall County Police, Bremen Police, Bremen Fire, and Tri-County EMS were dispatched to the intersection of Fir and 4th Roads.

Deputy Ryan Hollopeter investigated the accident and determined that a 2016 Mercedes Benz GLA, driven by an unnamed 17-year-old juvenile, was traveling southbound on Fir Road when it collided with the back of a small single-horse-drawn cart. Three juvenile occupants were riding in the cart, and the impact from the crash ejected all three from it. The unidentified juveniles were all declared deceased at the scene.

The Marshall County Sheriff’s Department is still investigating this collision.

Other agencies assisting at the scene include additional officers from the Marshall County Sheriff's Department, Bremen Police Department, Indiana State Police, the Bremen Fire Department, Tri-County EMS, Marshall County Coroner's Office, and the Marshall County Highway Department.

Hello! Sorry to bother you. My name is Cara, and I’m currently looking to connect with people who grew up Amish for a new documentary series, from the makers of Love On The Spectrum.

We are now casting people who are ready to journey into courtship for the first time, from all walks of life. If this resonates with you or your community, we would be incredibly grateful for your help spreading the word. Thank you! appreciate you posting for us!

The series will feature a diverse range of stories and we’d love to give as many people as possible the opportunity to contact us at [email protected] if they’re interested (any initial contact is very informal).

I’m hoping to be able to visit your area in person in the next few months. Is there any other ways you recommend I could get the word out to the Amish community from another state? Thank you!

My first thought was that this kitty had been run over and it scared me. But no. Just sunning itself at the Rentown restaurant. The cat was very much alive when I opened my door.

I love living here in northern Indiana! Despite the cold winters, the gentle life suits me. At an auction Wednesday, they sold this new Maytag. On the way home, I swear, I saw the Anheuser-Busch Clydesdales tending the farms…
