Meet our Board of Directors March Highlight: David Bernstein!🙂

David is the officer and co-owner of State Steel Supply Company, operating six steel service centers across the Upper Midwest. Beyond his professional leadership, David is a passionate champion for the arts and our community.

He is the founder and co-producer of Sioux City’s iconic “Saturday in the Park” Festival, a beloved annual tradition for over 30 years that brings nearly 25,000 music lovers to Grandview Park each summer. David plays a hands-on role in making this incredible event possible, helping with yearly fundraising, artist booking, event production, crowd safety, and risk management.

David has also served as vice president of the Orpheum Theatre Preservation Project, further demonstrating his dedication to strengthening arts and culture in our region.

Today is Local News Day —and we have something BIG to share. 📰

Local journalism is what keeps our communities connected. It tells the stories that matter, holds institutions accountable, and ensures residents have the information they need to participate in civic life.

But across rural Iowa, many newsrooms are falling behind—not because of lack of commitment, but because they lack the tools and infrastructure needed to keep up in a digital world.

That’s why the Western Iowa Journalism Foundation is taking action.

🚨 Applications are now OPEN for our Newsroom Modernization Project.
This 12-month pilot will equip selected newsrooms with:
✔️ Modern, mobile-friendly websites
✔️ Updated technology and equipment
✔️ Training to expand digital storytelling and audience reach

We will select four newsrooms in this first cohort—with the opportunity to expand as additional funding is secured.
