Our final day in Bariloche was about getting out and exploring a little more of the place that has hosted Mission Patagonia.

We spent the day taking in the landscape around the region, including Cerro Leones Cavernas del Viejo Volcan—one more reminder of just how much history, geology, adventure, and wild terrain are packed into this corner of Patagonia.

After a week centered on adaptive snowsports, connection, service, and time spent alongside our Argentine friends and Veterans, it felt right to finish by simply exploring.

Mission Patagonia has always been about more than a single activity or destination. It is about bringing Veterans together across borders, experiencing a place beyond the surface, learning from the people who call it home, and continuing to build relationships that can grow long after the expedition ends.

A fitting final day in Bariloche—and definitely not the end of the story.

Yesterday was a great day for Mission Patagonia — spending time on the mountain with the Fundación Desafío Bariloche team and finally delivering the donations that had been delayed in transit. 🇦🇷❄️

A huge thank you to STRIDE Adaptive Sports for donating two monoskis, 10 pairs of goggles, 10 neck gaiters, and 10 goggle lens covers, and to Alpin Haus RV & Boats for donating 10 pairs of winter gloves.

Special thanks to Mary Ellen Whitney, who helped get the donation started, and Alex Brame, Executive Director of STRIDE Adaptive Sports, who coordinated the pickup and additional gear.

The equipment will stay with Desafío Bariloche, supporting their instructors, volunteers, and athletes for seasons to come.

Today, Mission Patagonia stepped into a story far bigger than our own.

We were honored with a private tour of the
Museo Malvinas Antártida y Atlántico Sur, a museum and memorial dedicated to preserving the history and memory of the Malvinas conflict, honoring Argentina’s fallen, Veterans, and exploring Argentina’s connection to the Malvinas, Antarctica, and the South Atlantic.

Last year, we walked these halls while the museum was still under construction.

Today, we returned to see it completed and to experience it alongside Argentine Veterans who lived the history represented within its walls.

That made the visit unforgettable.

We heard their stories firsthand, learned more about their service and experiences, and had the opportunity to spend time simply talking Veteran to Veteran.

Beyond the exhibits, dates, and history are the things that matter most: the people, the memories, the sacrifice, and the lasting weight of service.

Different countries. Different uniforms. Different histories. Shared understanding.

Mission Patagonia may bring us to the mountains, but moments like this are what Valor Without Borders is really about- building relationships across cultures through service, respect, and shared experience.

To the Argentine Veterans who welcomed us, guided us through this history, and trusted us with their stories: ¡Gracias!

What a difference a year makes. 🇺🇸🇦🇷🏔️

Last year, Mission Patagonia was about laying the tracks and building relationships. This year, we’re back in Bariloche—and Mother Nature definitely showed up.

The Mission Patagonia team hit the slopes with incredible snow conditions, with some learning to ski for the first time and others getting back on snow, building skills, and exploring the whole mountain.

The day wasn’t just about skiing—it was also about developing instructional skills, learning how to teach, communicate, adapt, and help others progress on snow. From first turns to more advanced terrain, the team was building both personal confidence and the skills to eventually help create those same opportunities for others.

But Mission Patagonia has always been about more than skiing.

It’s about bringing U.S. and Argentine Veterans together through recreation, adventure-based wellness, shared experience, and skill development—building relationships across borders and creating pathways for Veterans to grow from participants into instructors, mentors, and leaders.

A year ago, this was an idea we were beginning to build.

Today, the team is exploring the mountain, developing new skills, and helping build what comes next.

Mission Patagonia Update 🇺🇸🇦🇷🏔️

Most of the Mission Patagonia team has arrived safe and sound in Bariloche, Argentina, and we’re excited to get this year’s mission underway!

Unfortunately, our donated adaptive monoskis have yet to arrive. These were generously donated to help expand access to adaptive snowsports in Bariloche, so we’re keeping our fingers crossed that they make it through the final leg of their journey soon. 🤞🎿

But the mission moves forward.

This week is about more than skiing and snowboarding—it’s about strengthening relationships between U.S. and Argentine Veterans, expanding adaptive recreation opportunities, exchanging skills and knowledge, and continuing to build something sustainable with our partners in Bariloche.

Last year we laid the tracks. This year, we’re pushing the mission forward.

A huge thank you to STRIDE Adaptive Sports for their continued support of Mission Patagonia!

For the second year in a row, STRIDE has generously donated adaptive monoskis to support our work in Bariloche, Argentina.

These monoskis are more than equipment. They help expand access to the mountains and create opportunities for Veterans and adaptive athletes to experience the freedom, challenge, connection, and confidence that come through adaptive snowsports.

Returning partners like STRIDE show what sustained commitment to the adaptive community looks like. Their continued support helps us build on what we started last year and keep pushing the mission forward.

Meet Mission Patagonia 2026 Team Member Chavez Gibbes 🇺🇸🫡

Chavez is a medically retired U.S. Army combat Veteran, chef, and dedicated advocate for strengthening the Veteran community.

Based in North Carolina, Chavez serves as a peer-support mentor for Veterans in Johnston County and is actively involved with the STRIDE Adaptive Sports Wounded Warriors program.

Chavez believes that what many Veterans need—and miss most after military service—is the camaraderie, shared purpose, and sense of belonging that come from working toward common goals.

Through farming and cooking, he creates opportunities for Veterans to reconnect, build supportive communities, and learn practical skills they can carry forward.

He is also an ambassador for the Warrior Horse program in Louisiana, which helps Veterans living with PTSD build connection, confidence, and healing through partnerships with horses.

Chavez brings to Mission Patagonia 2026 a deep commitment to service, peer mentorship, community building, and the belief that healing often begins when Veterans once again feel part of a team.

Meet Mission Patagonia team member Clifford Bruton! 🇺🇸⚓🇦🇷

Born and raised in Newark, New Jersey, Machinist’s Mate First Class Bruton dedicated 20 years to active-duty service in the U.S. Navy, serving from September 9, 1985, until his retirement on September 30, 2005.

Throughout his career, Clifford served aboard ships and at commands across the Navy, including Recruit Training Command Orlando, USS Blue Ridge (LCC-19), USS Belknap (CG-26), Naval Weapons Station Earle, Naval Air Station Roosevelt Roads, USS Mount Vernon (LSD-39), Naval Recruiting District New York, USS Belleau Wood (LHA-3), and NAVAIR Orlando Training Systems Division.

Much of his career was spent forward deployed throughout Asia, Southwest Asia, the Middle East, Africa, the Mediterranean, and the Caribbean. His distinguished service was recognized through numerous citations, commendations, ribbons, and medals.

Clifford brings decades of experience, leadership, adaptability, and service to Mission Patagonia. We are proud to have him join the team as Valor Without Borders continues building connections between Veterans across cultures and borders.

Meet Mission Patagonia 2026 team member Jay Angermeier! 🇺🇸🇦🇷

A retired active-duty United States Air Force Veteran and current Staff Sergeant in the Alaska Air National Guard, Jay has spent nearly two decades teaching, coaching, mentoring, and helping others grow.

His career has taken him from K–12 health and physical education classrooms to adult learning and professional development. Today, he facilitates leadership development, management training, team-building programs, and professional growth initiatives within the biopharmaceutical industry.

Jay’s connection to Mission Patagonia is deeply rooted in his commitment to adaptive sports and inclusive recreation. Since 2018, he has volunteered with Special Olympics and STRIDE Adaptive Sports as an adaptive ski and snowboard instructor, helping individuals of all abilities build confidence, independence, and resilience in the outdoors.

These experiences have strengthened Jay’s belief that meaningful growth happens when people are challenged, supported, and empowered to move beyond perceived limitations.

An award-winning facilitator, coach, and lifelong learner, Jay brings an approachable, people-centered leadership style to everything he does. Whether he is teaching a class, leading a team, or serving alongside fellow Veterans, he works to create meaningful connections that inspire growth and lasting impact.

For Jay, Mission Patagonia represents the intersection of service, leadership, adventure, and community. He looks forward to building relationships with fellow Veterans, embracing new challenges, and demonstrating that the spirit of service continues long after military retirement.

Meet Mission Patagonia Lead, Alex Scott. 🇺🇸🇦🇷

Returning to Argentina for a second year, Alex will help lead Mission Patagonia 2026 as Valor Without Borders continues strengthening international partnerships and expanding opportunities for Veterans.

A retired U.S. Army combat Veteran, Alex continues his commitment to service as Vice President and Chairperson of the Albany Tulip Chapter of the 82nd Airborne Division Association. He also remains actively involved with STRIDE Adaptive Sports and is working toward earning his adaptive snowboarding instructor certification this season.

Alex believes the strongest bonds are built by facing challenges together. For him, returning to Patagonia is about bringing Veterans together, building lasting relationships across borders, and proving that service does not end when the uniform comes off—it evolves.

We are proud to have Alex helping lead the mission back to Argentina.
