A Shared Effort for Cleaner Waterways
For generations, the waterways of Louisiana have provided food, transportation, and a place for communities to call home. For the Coushatta people, that connection reaches back to their ancestral homelands and continues through their history in Louisiana.
The garfish, an important symbol in Coushatta culture, represents courage, wisdom, strength, and discipline. It is a reminder of the relationship between the people and the natural world that has sustained them.
On November 14, 2026, Louisiana Bayou Society is honored to join the Coushatta Tribe for a collaborative cleanup effort in Elton, Louisiana.
This cleanup will serve as Louisiana Bayou Society’s Q4 2026 major cleanup. For anyone looking to join us for a public Louisiana Bayou Society event during the fourth quarter of 2026, this is the opportunity to participate.
This mission is about more than picking up litter. It is an opportunity to work side by side, share knowledge, and demonstrate what can be accomplished when people come together with a common purpose.
Together, tribal citizens, Louisiana Bayou Society volunteers, and community members will remove debris, protect wildlife habitat, and help restore the natural beauty of this important waterway. Every tire, piece of plastic, and abandoned item removed is one less threat to the environment and the people who depend upon it.
A successful cleanup means leaving the waterway in better condition than we found it. It means volunteers returning home with a greater understanding of the land and water, young people seeing the value of conservation firsthand, and our communities recognizing the impact of working together.
Mark your calendars for November 14, 2026, and plan on coming out to join us in Elton! Whether you have participated in a cleanup before or this will be your first time, we invite you to be part of this collaborative effort. Bring your friends, your family, and your willingness to make a difference.
The waters we will be cleaning are typically shallow, and volunteers should expect to do a considerable amount of walking through wet and uneven terrain. Please dress appropriately for the conditions. Long sleeves and rubber boots will be required, and we strongly encourage everyone to bring a sturdy pair of work gloves. Come prepared to get wet, get muddy, and put in some meaningful work.
The future we hope to inspire is one where clean waterways remain a shared priority—where cultural knowledge, community involvement, and environmental stewardship all contribute to protecting Louisiana’s natural resources.
For this day, we come together with one mission: to give back to the water that has given so much to our communities.
