Brattleboro is navigating a lot at once: a downtown that needs strengthening, a housing crunch, local businesses under pressure, and a long-term shift toward more resilient energy and infrastructure. The question isn't whether to change, but how to do it in a way that reflects who we are and where we want to go.

Join us for a "Main Street Brattleboro" version of the Sustainability Lens Game, developed by Tamara Stenn of Marlboro, to work through exactly that, together. You'll test ideas, weigh trade-offs, and come away with something more than a conversation.

Today is Nakba Day, marking 78 years since the displacement and loss that shaped the modern Middle East.

Also rooted in 1948: the Marshall Plan. At 7pm tonight, we're hosting a conversation, "Unwrapping the Marshall Plan." Paul Vincent will give us a closer look at the U.S. aid program that reshaped postwar Europe that same year. Who designed it, who benefited, and what it was really trying to accomplish. Importantly, why does it matter now?

Our events are always free and open to the public. RSVP here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/unwrapping-the-marshall-plan-tickets-1984573571977?aff=oddtdtcreator&keep_tld=true

In a village in India, women who had been bonded laborers reclaimed a piece of land and brought back their mothers' native seeds, which had been displaced by the Green Revolution. They then grew enough food to eat twice a day, impossible before that. David Bollier shared this story in his talk last June, "Think Like a Commoner."

Our next event is THIS Friday at 118 Elliot in Brattleboro. Event are free and open to the public, with a suggested donation of $10. See you there?

In 1948, the U.S. spent what amounts to $150 billion today rebuilding Western Europe after World War II. It worked, but the real story is complicated. This is a close look at what the Marshall Plan actually was, and why it matters now.

Paul Love, board member emeritus at WWAC, undertook to organize a talk on the Marshall Plan with Paul Vincent because it is so different from many other modern US interventions: "it seemed to me that in the recent past, in this century, the US has made several miss-steps in other countries either in the regimes we've supported or in ones we've worked to change. I thought it would be important to look at an effort which supported what we believe in." This event is a chance to understand what the Marshall Plan actually was, how it worked, and why that history is worth knowing right now.

Join us May 15 at 118 Elliot. Doors open at 6:30 pm. Suggested donation of $10, but no one turned away for lack of funds. See you there!

Brattleboro 250 Planning Sessions
Wednesday, April 22 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Come and connect with others who are interested in working on plans to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States in 2026.

This monthly meeting space on the 4th Wednesdays is dedicated for those who would like the opportunity to connect, collaborate, and work on projects that align with Vermont’s 250th Anniversary Commission’s mission to “…inspire all Vermonters to learn from the history, legacy, and context of the past to build strong Vermont communities for the future.”

The space is being hosted by Brooks Memorial Library, Vermont Independent Media (The Commons) and Windham World Affairs Council, with support from the Vermont Humanities Council. We are already working together on a collaboration entitled, ‘Examining American Identity and Leadership in a Changing World – and have joined America 250, a national initiative asking communities to plan for how to commemorate the 250th year of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Its mission is to provide opportunities for all Americans to pause and reflect on our nation’s past & present, honor the contributions of all Americans, and look to the future we want to create for the next generation and beyond.
