Write Action is a community-based, grass-roots writer’s organization formed in 1999 “to strengthen a community of writers in Brattleboro and the surrounding area; and to nurture, encourage, and promote the literary arts in the at-large community”.

Dear Friends of Write Action,

For over two decades, Write Action has strived to fulfill its mission of “Strengthening a community of writers in the Brattleboro area, and to encourage, nurture, and promote the literary arts in the greater Brattleboro community.” With your help, your participation, and support, we have largely succeeded. Thank you!

But we find ourselves at a crossroads financially, and in terms of what we can offer. Over the last two years, the Write Action board has lost several members, and we have not sent out a fundraising letter or email for quite some time.

For this reason, the Write Action board established an ad hoc committee of interested individuals to examine ways to strengthen and stabilize Write Action for the future. This committee endorsed the idea of adding a dues-paying membership level, and together with the board, settled on dues of $20 for the current year and $10 per year thereafter.

The newsletter will continue to be free for all subscribers.

Dues-paying members will receive benefits such as:

- Ability to announce and promote your work in the newsletter

- Ability to vote on major decisions put forward by the board

- Option of becoming a Write Action board member

- Opportunities to sell your book(s) at Write Action tabling events

- Discounted or free admission to Write Action entry-charged events or workshops

These benefits will be in addition to knowing that you are supporting a beloved and important organization and contributing to Brattleboro’s literary life.

Some examples of what Write Action does: the monthly newsletter, the Poems Around Town project, anthologies of local writing (the latest of which, “Through the Windows of Brattleboro,” will be available shortly), BUHS senior writing awards, and collaborating with other arts organizations on projects such as our Spotlight reading at the Brattleboro Literary Festival.

Happy National Poetry Month! Poetry reminds us that even the smallest moments can carry profound meaning. In that spirit, Write Action, Brooks Memorial Library, and ByWay Books & More are celebrating the sixth year of Poems Around Town (PAT) this April!

Over 90 poems by local and regional poets are on display throughout downtown Brattleboro during April. Poems will remain up through the first Gallery Walk on Friday, May 1.
Site guides are available at participating businesses and community locations. Join us in celebrating this month by taking a moment to stop at the Brattleboro locations below and pause for a moment to take in the impact of poetry.

Everyone is invited to attend a public reading on Saturday, April 18, from 2:00 to 4:00 PM at Brooks Memorial Library. We also have an exciting addition this year! A limited-edition collection, Through the Windows of Brattleboro, created by Write Action member Andy Burrows, featuring all selected poems (details coming soon). For more information, contact [email protected].

Now in its sixth year, Poems Around Town invites poets from Vermont and the tri-state region to submit their work for display throughout downtown Brattleboro. Selected poems will be featured in local business windows for the entire month of April, offering moments of beauty and reflection to residents and visitors alike as they explore downtown.

A printed flyer listing participating businesses along with each poet’s name and poem title will be available. To help broaden the reach and share even more poetry around town, some poems will also be duplicated and displayed in Canal Street businesses.

We’re so grateful to Severia Drake of ByWay Books & More for helping facilitate this effort again this year!

Poems Around Town (PAT) Submission Guidelines

- Poems must fit on one page.
- Font size must be at least 14-point and easy to read (such as Times New Roman, Cambria, or Helvetica).
