“BRATTLEBORO GOES FOURTH” SEEKS DONATIONS, PARADE ENTRIES

“By the People: Brattleboro Goes Fourth” is seeking donations and parade participants as it prepares to celebrate the town’s 53rd Independence Day event on Saturday, July 4, 2026.

The all-volunteer citizens committee will begin the day at 10 a.m. with a parade from Flat Street to Main Street and the Common. The shorter route comes after requests from older marchers and challenges finding enough volunteers and public safety patrols to monitor a longer distance.

Bands from the local American Legion and Brattleboro Union High School are set to join veterans, civic and youth groups and personality Alfred Hughes Jr., who will cap the event by debuting his annual top-secret ensemble.

People seeking a free application to join the march can email [email protected] before June 22.

After the parade, the town Recreation & Parks Department will offer a series of public concerts, sporting events and family activities at Living Memorial Park — just off Western Avenue and Interstate 91 Exit 2 — throughout the afternoon and evening until the start of fireworks at 9:30 p.m.

All July 4 programs are free thanks to citizen, civic and corporate donations. People can mail contributions to “Brattleboro Goes Fourth,” P.O. Box 1112, Brattleboro, VT 05302 and find more information by logging onto the Brattleboro Goes Fourth page or by emailing [email protected].

NEW HISTORY BOOK CELEBRATES “BRATTLEBORO ON PARADE”

A new “Brattleboro on Parade” book, set to go on sale Nov. 9, will celebrate the town’s history through photos of local marches, cavalcades and protests.

The 104-page paperback, featuring images from the Brattleboro Historical Society, spans from horse-drawn Valley Fair carriages dating as far back as 1889 to the current “By the People: Brattleboro Goes Fourth” Independence Day parade.

In between, the book pictures historic events including presidential visits, local troops departing for World War I and II, nearly a century of Brattleboro Union High Alumni Parades and the school band’s appearances at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and Barack Obama’s inauguration.

The pictorial also documents the 1939 local debut of “The Wizard of Oz,” the 1953 move of St. Michael’s Episcopal Church to its present site and the 1982 ticker-tape homecoming for World Cup-winning cross-country skier Bill Koch.

The book, with text by local writer Kevin O’Connor, is timed to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 2026.

It will debut Nov. 9 at a Brattleboro Historical Society program on local parades at 2 p.m. at the Municipal Center at 230 Main St. Copies will be on sale at the event for $20, paid either by cash or check (no credit cards).

The paperback will then be available at Everyone’s Books (which will offer an online ordering option), ByWay Books, Book Lovers and Lost Time Books.
