What does it take to respond effectively when communities face crisis and uncertainty?

Students in SIT’s Global Master of Arts in Humanitarian Assistance & Crisis Management explore that question through immersive learning in Jordan, Turkey, and Morocco. Along the way, they connect classroom learning with real-world perspectives on humanitarian response, displacement, policy, advocacy, and crisis management.

It’s a global approach to preparing for work that crosses borders, cultures, and communities.

Current Sustainable Development Practice student Isabel Langlois-Romero takes us behind the scenes of her practicum:

"With our final semester here, my classmates and I are in full swing working on our practicums and research capstones. Through a twist of fate, I came to support Kara Solar’s incredible work on solar river transportation. For me, this meant coming back to Ecuador and living in Quito, commuting to their office and supporting on research. I was able to perform combustion fuel analyses on existing river transport, support the development of monitoring and evaluation methodologies, and complete an acoustic health, biodiversity, and water quality monitoring research proposal. I am inspired by the work at Kara Solar, so when I was invited to a capacity building event in Puyo before starting my field research - I didn’t hesitate. At the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador’s (CONAIE) headquarters in Puyo, several organizations came together to support over 40 youth leaders from 11 different indigenous nationalities of the Amazon to learn about just transitions and renewable energy. Kara Solar directors, territory coordinators, and technician’s led a full day of exchange on how solar rivers can act of a pathways for indigenous sovereignty, and they proceeded to demo the technical installation of a solar array at the headquarters. Witnessing the exchange of knowledge and support from organizations like Sacred Earth (a Canadian indigenous organization) reminds us that belonging and solidarity migrate beyond borders and that investing in our next generation has to built into our work. "

Our PhD in International relations students recently started their program with a 10-day residency in Belgrade, Serbia, where they focused on the refugee crisis and the rise of illiberalism. During this time, they engaged with EU policymakers, local activist organizations, and scholars to learn about the shifting power relations of contemporary Europe in the context of forced migration, war, and shifting European identity.

This cohort will continue their doctoral journey over the next four years through a primarily online learning model, with an additional international residency in Amman, Jordan. Designed for working professionals in international affairs, the program explores peacebuilding, conflict and refugee response, and humanitarian affairs. Throughout their studies, students critically examine traditional geopolitical approaches and develop evidence-based strategies to advance human security.
