VMCO General Meeting Overview – Thursday, April 16, 2026

The meeting opened with keynote speaker Ed Wilson, Co-founder, Vice President, and Director of Veteran Services at VMCO. He shared highlights from his recent trip to Vietnam with the College of the Ozarks Patriotic Activities Department, led by Chassidy Brittain.

Ed was joined by five College of the Ozarks students who participated in the trip and offered their perspectives: Joshia Goldinier (Senior, Conservation and Wildlife Management), Gracie McDonald (Junior, Secondary Education – Mathematics), Tyler McHaffie (Junior, Military Science), Rebecca Eatherly (Human Molecular Biology and Spanish; minor in Biochemistry, Pre-Physician Assistant), and Melaina Wilson (Junior, Animal Science, Pre-Veterinary emphasis). A film and photos documenting the trip, captured by Shann Swift of SwiftShots, were also presented.(click here to see video https://youtu.be/0rdH-L0M33s and pictures below)

During a Q&A session, the students shared several meaningful reflections:

•The importance of staying curious, asking questions, and being present in the moment
•Regret over not asking family members, particularly a grandfather, more about their Vietnam War experiences
•Encouragement for veterans to share their stories, regardless of how significant they may seem
•Lessons learned from veterans about forgiveness and letting go of resentment
•Inspiration from a former prisoner of war who demonstrated forgiveness and curiosity despite his experiences

Each student received a VMCO challenge coin in recognition of their participation.

A special presentation followed, led by Brigadier General Bradley Leonard, who awarded Specialist George Pezold the Bronze Star for meritorious service in Vietnam from February 1970 to February 1971. (click here https://youtu.be/pb31Cwg_kHM to see video) General Leonard emphasized that Bronze Stars are earned through exceptional service and described George as a hero. He expressed humility in honoring him and thanked him for his service. (see video below) Both George Pezold and General Leonard were also presented with VMCO challenge coins.
