The Small Things Tanzania

The Small Things Tanzania We believe kids belong in families whenever it is possible, and when it's not an option, kids deserve loving, family-style homes.

The Small Things works to support children and families, through sustainable and participatory care plans focused on child development and community empowerment in Tanzania. The Small Things (TST) is a non-profit, non-government organization providing support to vulnerable children and families in the Meru district of Tanzania through residential care, education, medical services, and business sup

port. The children who come into our care are most often from neglect/abuse situations or when the mother has passed away. Our first priority is keeping families together and to aid this goal, we provide business training, microfinance, and other support through our family preservation program. However, in some cases long term care is a necessity. In those cases, we aim to build real homes with healthy attachments to loving local caregivers. The Small Things recognizes local problems require local leadership and solutions, and listen to the community and families we work with in order to create sustainable, participatory and evolving care plans for the children's future. When children can't be reunited with family or adopted, we work with the community to create long term, family-style homes at Happy Family Children's Village. The kids grow up embedded in their community, where they belong, supported by a network of sponsors from across Tanzania and the world.

School's out, and for the next four weeks, Happy Family Children's Village is full of life. The kids have been counting down the days, and honestly so have we!

We take birthdays pretty seriously around here, and we got to celebrate Pendo's 14th recently! Usually our birthday table is packed as we do a monthly joint birthday celebration, but May belonged to one person: Pendo. Lucky her!

We think it's quite fitting that this week falls on National Smile Day!

Around here, both the residential and daycare/preschool kids are never short of smiles. No matter what a child has been through, their smile has a way of reminding you exactly why our work matters.

Meet Vicky, a sweet, shy girl with a personality bigger than she'd ever let on. Tickle her once and you'll see exactly what we mean! Thanks to our Family Preservation program, Vicky and her older sister Queen were reunited with their father, who calls TST home as a member of our own security team. Today, the sisters are thriving at Makumira Secondary School and spending their holidays right where they belong: home.

Last week, our preschool children traded the classroom for something a little more exciting... a trip to AIM Mall for a day of fun!

But learning came along for the ride, too. Along the route, they took in houses, markets, buildings of all shapes and sizes, and vehicles, connecting what they know to what they see. Learning and fun, all in one day.

With your help, we've enrolled over 80 children since 2019, more than 20 of which on full or partial scholarships. That's what your support makes possible.

A single parent can't work if they have nowhere safe to leave their child. And without work, things can spiral fast. Poverty should never be the reason a family is separated, but without support, that's exactly what happens.

Our daycare & preschool is our answer to that problem. It gives children from 6 months old through primary school enrollment age a safe, loving place to learn and grow, while their parents go to work and keep their families together. No family is turned away because of cost.

This is all down to your continued support! Head over to the link below to continue making this possible:

to when a little boy named Ema first came to Nkoaranga Orphanage, having lost his mother at birth. That small child grew into someone truly special.

Over the years at Happy Family Children's Village, Ema became the kind of older brother every kid needs: patient, warm, and always present. Today, he's a friendly and mature young man making his way through life. We love watching you grow, Ema!

Jovin is thriving at Happy Family Children's Village, surrounded by the love and support of his mamas and the wider family of children he calls home. Now in Grade 2 at Silverleaf Academy, he is doing wonderfully in his studies and approaching each school day with enthusiasm. Our team continues to walk alongside Jovin in both his education and daily life, cheering him on every step of the way.

Children like Jovin flourish when they have consistent care, a safe place to grow, and people who believe in them. Your sponsorship helps make that possible. If you would like to be part of Jovin's journey, we would love to have you alongside us. Head to the link below and sponsor this wonderful kid today:

Last week, a local Arusha-based company generously donated a 5,000-litre water tank (1320 gallons), four picnic tables for our dining area, and fourteen classroom chairs to the children at The Small Things!

Every gift like this makes a real difference in the daily lives of our kids, and we couldn't be more grateful!
