Did you know honeybees have to visit about 2 million flowers to make just 1 pound of honey? ๐
Producing honey is hard work! A single honeybee only makes about 1/12 of a teaspoon of honey in its lifetime. All of the bees in the hive must visit roughly 2 MILLION flowers and fly over 55,000 miles to create just 1 pound of honey! ๐ฏ
Bees find all of those flowers through color receptors in their eyes that see a different spectrum from us. They see in wavelengths of green, blue, and ultraviolet, which means they can't see red. There is also a secret color only they can see called "bee's purple" that can only be seen in ultraviolet! That is why bees are most drawn to purple and yellow flowers to make their honey and pollinate our gardens! ๐ป
The bees would definitely be drawn to the flowers in our dining room right now, provided by the Branford Garden Club, with all of their purple and blue colors and yellow accents. ๐ชด๐ธ๐
How do you help our local pollinators and honeybees? Do you plant your garden with any wildflowers for them? ๐ชป๐๐ท
