Secondchancequest

Secondchancequest Started in 2016 by inmates, our inmate & youth mentoring programs reduce recidivism & crime.

At Second Chance Quest our mission is to reduce the school to prison pipeline by empowering prisoners to lead productive lives when they leave prison by providing them with the support and resources necessary to not only impact their lives, but the lives of at-risk children and the communities to which they belong to as well. Started by inmates in 2016, our 12-week mentoring program prepares inmat

es to be more productive while in prison and succeed in society upon release. Our goal is to aid & assist prisoners through our understanding of incarceration and address ways to productively and constructively serve out their time. To date, hundreds of inmates have graduated from our program, many of which have been released on parole and are living productive lives. Our Youth Mentoring Program provides young people with opportunities to learn and grow through meaningful group interactions with business professionals and individuals with valuable life experiences. Delivered in schools, youth correctional facilities, and community centers, this structured 8-week program is modeled after our proven inmate mentoring model. Our mission is to reduce youth crime by giving young people positive outlets, supportive role models, and pathways to productive futures.

April is Second Chance Month—a time to recognize the power of redemption and the real impact that second chances can have in our communities.

As a member of the Sentencing Project’s Second Look Network, Second Chance Quest witnesses every day that people are more than the worst thing they’ve done. When given meaningful opportunities, individuals rebuild their lives, strengthen their families, and make lasting, positive contributions to their communities.
Today, more than 300 participants in Second Chance Quest’s in-prison peer-support groups are charting new futures.

This April, let’s turn awareness into action.

For over a decade, Second Chance Quest has been transforming prison peer-support into real reductions in recidivism.

Through in-prison education, mentorship, and post-release support, we’re helping break cycles of incarceration and build pathways to lasting change.

April is Second Chance Month—a time to recognize the 70 million Americans living with a record and the barriers they face when rebuilding their lives. While challenges like limited opportunities and reentry preparation persist, progress is real. Since the Second Chance Act of 2007, reincarceration rates have dropped by 23% across U.S. states.

Today, more than 300 participants in Second Chance Quest’s in-prison peer-support groups are charting new futures.

You can make a difference! “It’s never too late to be what you might have been.” — George Eliot

Total population behind bars: The U.S. holds roughly 1.8–2 million people in prisons and jails.

Incarceration rate: About 500–700 people per 100,000 residents, depending on how it’s measured.

This rate is much higher than most other countries, including places like Canada, Germany, or Japan.

The U.S. is an outlier because of
- Longer sentences, especially for violent and drug-related offenses
- Mandatory minimum laws and “three strikes” policies
- A legacy of policies from the War on Drugs
- Higher use of pretrial detention (people jailed before conviction)
- Parole and probation systems that can send people back to prison
Important nuance

Crime rates alone don’t explain it—many countries with similar or even higher crime rates incarcerate fewer people.

The U.S. system is shaped heavily by policy choices, not just crime levels.

Masked But Not Hidden: Voices Behind the Wall. Our newsletter is dedicated to amplifying the voices of individuals within the prison system. Through powerful personal narratives, it provides a platform for sharing stories of growth, resilience, and transformation.

Our Voices Behind the Wall series offers meaningful insight into lived experiences, challenges perceptions, and inspires change. By bringing these stories to light, we aim to humanize those often overlooked and ensure their voices are heard beyond the walls that confine them.
