Last week was a sad reminder for us of why we believe that relocating cats should only be a last resort, when a cat's life is truly in danger. We were in a neighborhood where we had previously worked on a well managed public colony 9 years ago. We had gotten all the cats spayed, neutered and vaccinated and then a few years later, one of the caretakers was moving away. She wanted all the cats relocated which we refused to do. We explained the cats were safe, they had shelters and other caretakers, and this was the only home they had ever known. It would be very stressful, confusing and possibly dangerous for them to be relocated. We explained the "vacuum effect", how removing the cats would only allow new unneutered cats to move in and start the cycle all over again. Instead of following our advice, she moved away and paid a "rescue" to trap the cats and take them to a "sanctuary". The result? We spent all last week trapping, transporting, spaying, neutering, vaccinating, recovering, and returning 13 new cats that moved in to the same location after the previous cats were removed. We still have to return to trap the remaining 4 cats.
