Aslan wasn’t just a name—it was who he was.

He was named after Aslan, the great lion from The Chronicles of Narnia, a symbol of courage, sacrifice, hope, and unconditional love.

If you knew our Aslan, you know just how fitting that name became. He had the gentlest heart, a quiet strength, and a way of making everyone feel safe and loved. He changed lives simply by being himself.

Aslan was more than a beloved family member—he was an extraordinary service dog.

He earned his Puppy obedience, Basic Obedience, Canine Good Citizen, Urban Canine Good Citizen, and Therapy Dog certifications. His achievements reflected his intelligence, dedication, and gentle spirit, but his greatest accomplishment was the countless lives he touched. ❤️

Meet Aslan.

Born on December 10, 2020, and welcomed into our family in February 2021, Aslan quickly became so much more than a dog. He had the biggest heart and a way of making everyone feel loved.

🐾 3 Specific Questions to Ask Your Vet If Your Dog Isn't Getting Better (Save This!)

First, thank you all so much for sharing Aslan’s story!!
I love to see how many took the time to share! The more people that share the more we can get the word out there! Because of you, thousands of owners now know the name Blastomycosis. But knowing the name is only step one. The hardest part of Blasto is that it mimics common infections. If your dog is sick, showing respiratory symptoms and standard treatments aren't working, you have to be their advocate! And you need to be quick about it.

Copy, paste, or screenshot these questions for your next vet visit:
“Could this be fungal?" – Vets often default to bacterial infections. Explicitly putting a fungal infection on their radar changes their diagnostic approach.
“Can we run a Blasto urine antigen test?" – This test is highly accurate, non-invasive, and catches the infection much faster than waiting for cultures to grow.
“Does our regional geography put my dog at risk?" – Remind them if your dog frequents lakes, hiking trails, camping areas or newly cleared construction sites.

The X-rays of a blasto case are also different from a typical bacterial pneumonia as well. This is another hint that things aren’t quite as they should be. Don’t be afraid to ask questions!! You are your pups only voice!

Ok friends, so I know this is going to get a little long, but please bear with me, it could save the life of your beloved pup or someone’s you may know. A good friend brought to my attention a recent post about another dog that passed from the same illness that took Aslan’s life. Blastomycosis. I want to make an owner education post, and I’d like as many people as possible to share! The more awareness we can spread to owners maybe we can save even just 1 dog.

Blastomycosis is a systemic fungal infection caused by inhaling or coming into contact with fungal spores found in moist, decomposing soil. These are usually found near bodies of water and/or disturbed land. Dogs can become infected after inhaling microscopic fungal spores that have been stirred up from the soil. Dogs are especially susceptible to infection because they sniff and dig in the soil, which can stir up the spores.

Activities that disturb the soil are high-risk. Examples include:
Camping
Farming
Landscaping
Hiking
Construction

Symptoms of blastomycosis in dogs depends on which organs are affected. Signs may include:

Lethargy
A dry, harsh cough
Difficulty breathing
Nasal discharge, sometimes with blood
Skin nodules or lesions with pus
Fever
Swollen lymph nodes
Weight loss or lack of appetite
Eye issues, such as inflammation, blindness, or swelling
Urinary issues
Neurological issues
Lameness or limping

Diagnosing and testing early is key when a dog has blastomycosis. Any delay severely diminishes a dogs chance of survival. It is extremely important for owners to advocate for their pets! Ask questions! No question is too dumb! Blastomycosis is in this area! It lives in moist soil and decomposing organic matter like rotting leaves and wood.

We as pet owners need to make sure we ask our vets if blastomycosis is/could be a diagnosis if things are uncertain. There are tests that can be done to check it.

Aslan was diagnosed too late. Please don’t let it be too late for your pup. It takes 2 seconds to share and that 2 seconds could save the life of yours or possibly someone else’s best friend.
