St. Teresa of Avila teaches us that we are called to be another Christ in the world. Namely to be his hands, his feet, his eyes, and his heart in a world in need of the divine. And the divine can be seen in us and through us, we just need to ask God to give us the graces to do the work he calls us to and to love others as he asks us to love.

From 1950 to 1956, Blessed Fulton Sheen was National Director of the Pontifical Mission Societies He was the celebrant of 16 World Mission Sundays! His syndicated column was published in many Catholic newspapers, including The Boston Pilot

He had a talent for getting a serious point across in a humorous way and wrote this poem for our publication in 1964 to encourage people to be generous on World Mission Sunday -- this year, October 18.

He widens the invitation: “Go therefore into the main roads and invite everyone you find”. This is mission in its purest form. The Gospel moves outward. Boundaries dissolve. Before Pope Leo was the Pope he was a missionary priest in Peru for 30 years and he relied on the tremendous generosity of the Church in areas of the world that were wealthier who gave to his poor mission diocese. He was so grateful for those gifts!

As Holy Father, Pope Leo is now tasked with asking for your generous contributions this October 18th on World Mission Sunday so that he, as Pope, can give to poor missionary dioceses all over the world.

The month of October is known as the month of the Rosary, but it’s also known as the month of the Missions, and Blessed Fulton Sheen brought these two spiritual understandings together in a beautiful way. Sheen understood the power of the prayer of the Rosary so much so that in 1951 he designed the World Mission Rosary and said that when we pray the Rosary “we must pray, and not for ourselves, but for the world.”

On this Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, pick up your Rosary and ask Our Lady’s intercession for the areas of the world where the Church is poor, where the faith is young and hasn’t taken root, and where the Church is persecuted. Our Lady of the Rosary, pray for the world!

Daria Braithwaite, Coordinator of the Missionary Childhood Association, asked 75 middle schoolers “how do we continue Jesus’ mission here on earth?” And her answer to them was simple—”we pray and we sacrifice.” Catholic school children from 5 schools came to the pastoral center for Mission Education Day yesterday to learn more about the missions with talks from missionaries Fr. Maurice Agbaw-Ebei from Cameroon and Sr. Lisa Valentini from the Missionary Sisters of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. Archbishop Henning celebrated the Mass where we read the parable of the Good Samaritan and said there could not have been a better choice of reading for what we mark and do today with the Missionary Childhood Association because of what Jesus is teaching through this parable—“who is my neighbor?”
