Watch for loons and other wildlife!

PLEASE SHARE WIDELY!
With so many boats and jet skis on the lakes, the week of the 4th of July is the most dangerous time for loons! Boat and jet ski strikes are a leading cause of adult loon and chick deaths. Boats are coming at loons from many directions at high speeds and loons can’t anticipate the sudden and erratic moves of jet skis. Loons won’t dive when protecting chicks, chicks are difficult to see and can’t dive out of the way. Be loon aware and always assume loons won’t dive out of your way.

This loon chick arrived yesterday, on Merrifield Bay. It was a chilly (for June), windy day but the bouncing around didn't seem to bother the chick much. A few times Mom (I assume Mom) held her wing open for the chick to come in and warm up but it was happy just being outside.

Many of our members have commented on dead fish showing up on their shoreline. The NLLA spoke with John Kempe, MN DNR Fisheries Specialist in their Brainerd office. Here's what we found out.

Other local lakes, including Gull, Round and Perry, are also reporting fish kills. There are three causes:

- the rapidly increasing temperature; not just the temperature itself but also how quickly the temperature rose
- panfish are spawning, which is an additional stressor
- lack of rain is lowering runoff of nutrients in the the lake, reducing plant growth and therefore oxygen in the water

We should see a reduction in the numbers of dead fish next week. It you are still seeing dead fish next week, or are seeing other species such as Walleye and Pike, or are seeing issues with the appearance of the fish such as skin lesions, please send a note to [email protected].

Minnesota has a phone number for reporting fish kills or other environmental issues. The number is 800-422-0798. They will take the necessary information and contact the appropriate state agency.

Love loons? The DNR is looking for volunteers to monitor the loon population on lakes in Aitkin & Crow Wing Counties.
