At Camp Sertoma, something really powerful happens when campers don’t have to work to be understood.

There’s no need to explain themselves, repeat things, or navigate communication barriers. Instead, they can just be themselves. They can focus on making friends, trying new things, and enjoying every moment of camp.

That kind of environment creates a sense of comfort and belonging that many campers don’t experience anywhere else. You can see it in how quickly friendships form and how confident campers become, sometimes in just a few days.

When someone feels truly understood, they open up. They take more chances. They grow.

Spring is officially here, which means we are one day closer to camp week!

Longer days, warmer weather, and summer right around the corner. We can’t help but start counting down to a week full of laughter, connection, and unforgettable memories at Camp Sertoma.

Created in honor of Jon “Hopper” Haapajoki, the Hopper Dream Team helps ensure that Deaf and Hard of Hearing youth continue to have access to the life-changing experience of Camp Sertoma. Donations support scholarships, accessible activities, interpreting services, and everything that makes camp possible.

Camp Sertoma is full of fun, laughter, and unforgettable memories — but it’s also a place where campers grow in ways that last far beyond one week.

Throughout their time at camp, campers build:
• Confidence – trying new activities and stepping outside their comfort zones
• Independence – making choices, problem-solving, and navigating camp life
• Communication skills – connecting with peers and counselors in a fully accessible environment
• Friendships – forming bonds with others who share similar experiences
• Leadership – learning how to support, encourage, and uplift one another

At Camp Sertoma, communication barriers are removed, allowing campers to fully engage, express themselves, and be understood. That kind of environment creates space for real growth — and it shows.

Many of our campers leave camp not only with great memories, but with a stronger sense of who they are and what they’re capable of.

One of the most special things about Camp Sertoma is seeing our campers grow up and return to camp as leaders. Many of the counselors who help create such meaningful experiences for our campers today once stood in their shoes as campers themselves.

Benjamin Buckley, now a Camp Sertoma counselor, is one of those individuals. Camp meant so much to him growing up that he returned to help create the same experience for the next generation of campers.

Benjamin shared this about his journey with Camp Sertoma:

“When I was a camper, Camp Sertoma was consistently the highlight of my summers every year. Being with kids who understood me in a unique way mixed with counselors who went above and beyond to create a special connection with me and others made for an amazing and special experience.

When the time came for me to work at Camp Sertoma, I didn’t see it as a job but as a way to bring the amazing experience I had as a camper to numerous others. From helping kids on an obstacle course, to simply talking with them about their own interests, and seeing their smiles as they have fun, learn, and grow, it is something that is incredibly special to me and amazing to see as well as do.

Camp Sertoma is still the highlight of my summers. Getting to know the kids and create the best week of their summers is incredibly fun and something that never loses its magic.”

Benjamin’s story is a great example of how the Camp Sertoma community continues to grow — campers become counselors, mentors, and role models for those who come after them.

For Deaf and Hard of Hearing youth, the world can sometimes feel isolating. Classrooms, sports teams, and community spaces aren’t always designed with communication access in mind.

But for one week each summer, that changes.

At Camp Sertoma, communication flows freely, friendships form naturally, and campers discover what it feels like to truly belong. Surrounded by peers who share similar experiences, campers build confidence, try new adventures, and realize they are part of a vibrant and supportive community.

Camp Sertoma is more than campfires and outdoor activities. It’s a place where youth discover their strengths, practice leadership, and create friendships that last far beyond the week at camp.

For many campers, Camp Sertoma is the first place they see a future full of possibility; where being Deaf or Hard of Hearing is not a barrier, but a shared connection.

Because every young person deserves a place where they feel seen, understood, and celebrated.
