We had to say no today.
It absolutely tore my heart to say no, but we had to. With Sven and Xander, and now Jim requiring our constant attention and draining our funds with medical expenses, we are not in a position to take on more CRITICAL cases. Its absolutely a gut wrenching feeling. But donations have been down, and its now directly impacting the movement we can make. The two horses today we said no to, are not owner surrenders and required a purchase price much too high to be reasonable despite them needing medical attention. We never ever turn away horses, so to do this was really difficult.

But its the responsible thing to do when we know for a FACT we can care for all the ones we have now efficiently, thoroughly, ethically and completely.

There has to be a line somewhere, we have an impending hay bill this week of $2,025 that still needs to be covered... and a cube order of $800 and Jims vet bill for his tests and antibiotics of near $600

We provide quality rescue over quantity. We dont bail out an entire auction house, we bite off what we CAN and go from there. We individualize every single horse in our care and tailor the care to their needs.

So please say a prayer today, that we reach new eyes and new hearts to improve donations. We will be down at the MN state fair this weekend Saturday- Sunday - Mondayto spread the word about our meet and greet which will hopefully help cover our winter hay bill.

Also, to note. WE ARE STILL TAKING OWNER SURRENDERS. This is a much different situation. The horses we were asked to "purchase" to rescue were ridiculously priced and both critical cases which would wind us up in the thousands of dollars of care. ‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️

Cora ❣️ and Zarrin 🌟

Zarrin really likes Cora, Cora could care less about Zarrin now that they have new friends in the pasture.

Aged 20s belgian mares, retired work gals from the plow community.

Neither have a mean bone in their body.
They were owner surrenders earlier this summer.

Cora has a hematoma on her side and history of breaks in her leg that are now healed and calcified but she remains sound and comfortable.

Zarrin has cushings and is now started on daily medication, is broke to ride and loves to do it. She is pigeon toed so requires attentive farrier care to keep her balanced and comfortable.

Because cora is a sanctuary case, and Zarrin is so bonded to her. The two will remain in our care 🧡

Both are so photogenic it makes us jealous!

Caspi is being treated for ulcers right now, and once he is finished we can continue working with him to assess his training, temperment and capabilities to work toward determining what a forever home may look like.

Sharing again to hopefully find new hearts and new eyes 🧡 we raised $210 towards our $1,000 goal. We had a $600 vet bill this week and we have a huge farrier day coming, and we need a pallet of cubes which is $800 AND we have a hay pick up this week.... 45 bales at $45 a bale is $2,025 and now I'm stressing 😅

Happy one year anniversary to Second Chance Drafts Co. Being officially announced and launched and open 🥳🪅🙌🎉🎊🎆

NEVER did we imagine to have moved the mountains we have this far in only one year.

So many horses lives touched, and changed for the better. So many new faces, relationships, and partnerships established!

Many horses have found their ways into forever homes! If you are an adopter and have a photo please feel free to share in the comments!!

Donkeys, mules and even two hinnies 🥰

We woke up one day in May of 2025 when Right as Rain 🌧 came to us (pictured in the first photo on the right of the pic) and we agreed we were in a position to change lives and we wanted to 🧡 so the planning began, and to say we jumped in and "put the cart before the horse" would be VERY accurate.

Those who have been with us since the beginning can attest to the fencing, shelter, and accommodation changes we have improved over the year, and more things to come!

We have spent countless nights awake, planning, stressing, fundraising, discussing, crying, etc but its all worth it for these guys.

Thank you to an entire year of support and love.

Thankful for blood, sweat and tears that have been poured into this place by us, the volunteers, friends, family etc.

We will be back at the state fair grounds with 4 of our horses this coming weekend September 5th, 6th and 7th for the aisle of breeds! Stop by and meet some of these big guys. OR come on out to our fall meet and greet September 27th for Carmel apples and wagon rides!

But most of all, Kody and I couldnt do this without each other... we are thankful to build this dream together 🧡

🧡 Thankful Sunday 🧡

Highlight * Jim ate 1 carrot this morning for me... thats a huge happy moment given how sick he is right now. 😭🥰

Thankful that I get to share with you all, the creation and art that our friend Alyssa captured for us this past week. She came to do photos of the newbies and chat about our up and coming website - and Im going to share them with you over the next week 🥰

Thankful for each and every $1, like, comment and share. We are being hammered with vet bills lately and we have successfully paid each and everyone of them in full so far.

Thankful for everyones kind words of affirmation and support lately. Burn out is real and these horses make it worth it.

Thankful friends of ours came over 2 weeks ago and helped Kody fix the tractor so we could put hay out more efficiently now! 😭🧡

Thankful for the chewy donations.... those are literally saving these guys as you fill their bellies!!!

Thankful to have made it through another week of chaos, to post another Thankful Sunday 🙏

Some of you may know Big Jim 🥩 by his giant green halter, or his long moose like face and giant heart.....

❤️‍🩹 BIG JIM NEEDS US RIGHT NOW ❤️‍🩹

Our big guy is not feeling well, and we could really use all the prayers, good thoughts, and support you can send his way.

Big Jim has lost a considerable amount of weight and has very little appetite. His bloodwork showed that he is anemic, with alarmingly low red and white blood cell counts, and anyone who knows Jim knows just how hard it is to see this big, sweet horse so down in his spirits.

Right now, we know that something infection-related appears to be going on in his gut, but we are still waiting on additional test results before we have definitive answers. We aren't going to speculate or jump to conclusions.

For now, we're treating what is in front of us and doing everything we can to keep him comfortable and supported.

He has started IM antibiotics, and we are waiting for an additional antibiotic to arrive so we can get that started as quickly as possible.

His numbers are not low enough that he needs a transfusion this second, but we're watching him and his bloodwork closely.

The little bit of good news we're holding onto is that Jim is still eating hay. ❤️ Unfortunately, he has refused his grain and even his treats—which, for Jim, tells us just how crummy he really feels.

We are already upwards of $600 into his veterinary care, and we know there is more coming as we continue testing, medications, follow-up bloodwork, and whatever supportive care he may need.

For tonight, we're keeping our big guy comfortable, offering him anything he might be willing to eat, giving him lots of love, and waiting for answers.

Please keep Big Jim in your thoughts and prayers. And if you're able to help us shoulder some of his unexpected veterinary expenses, every single dollar truly helps us keep saying yes to whatever Jim needs next.

We aren't giving up on our big guy.
One day, one test, one meal, and one step at a time. ❤️‍🩹🐴🥩
