When the Civil War ended, most Confederate leaders surrendered. đ¤
Texas Governor Pendleton Murrah did something else entirely.
Rather than face Union occupation, Murrah gathered a desperate column of Confederate officers, soldiers, and officials and rode south through the brutal South Texas brush country in the summer of 1865.
Their destination: Mexico.
It became known as the "Confederados" exodus, and Murrah was among the most prominent men to make the ride. He crossed the Rio Grande into Maximilian's Mexico, broken in health and spirit, and died in Monterrey just weeks later, never setting foot in Texas again.
Most Texans have never heard this story. But it happened, and it says everything about the chaos and collapse that followed the fall of the Confederacy in the Lone Star State. đ
