A serious question: Does this sound reasonable to you or would you prefer a separate ordinance enacted to specifically allow just a few chicken hens? Please review the following and let us know.

In pdf format the petition signature sheet is here:
http://www.fileden.com/files/2012/10/27/3360974/petition-signature-sheet.pdf

A one-page information sheet to be distributed with the petition is here:

The Manatee County Library computer system will not open these pdfs, I don't know why. In order to print them the only solution I could find was to convert them to html documents and find another host site. In that form:

For those who wish to read the information without leaving Facebook, it has been copied into a note which can be found here: http://www.facebook.com/notes/bradenton-poultry-pals/information-sheet-short-version/440272469387100

Tomorrow morning I will be calling the City Council office to find out if there is an official format for petitions to be submitted to the council. In the meantime, please review the following and let us know what you think, any opinions you may have. Once it is formatted we'll start gathering signatures all over town. If you would want and be able to help with that, please contact us so we can plan the when and where.

Petition to Repeal the Poultry Keeping Prohibition in Bradenton, Florida

We, the residents of Bradenton, petition the Bradenton City Council to repeal ordinance section 14-4 which prohibits keeping domestic fowl within the city limits based on the following:

When kept in a residential setting, domestic fowl are the same as other pets with the same requirements, responsibilities and benefits. They are a quiet, friendly and easy to maintain healthy source of nutritional food for many people nationwide. Domestic fowl are of great educational and economic importance.

The existing Sound Control Ordinance (Section 38-154) prohibits the keeping of any animal that makes an unreasonable amount of noise. Any animal clearly covers all animals making further ordinances based on animal sounds unnecessary. Many common pets have the ability to make sound equal to or greater than domestic fowl yet are not prohibited entirely.

The existing land use regulations for accessory uses of residential buildings (Part III, Section 5.1) permit the keeping of common pets with the restrictions of no more than six animals of more than one year old and the animals must be confined to the property. This ordinance effectively creates a restriction on the quantity of birds which will limit the amount of sounds, smells or other potentially bothersome effects on neighbors of residential poultry keepers. It also requires the birds be confined to the owner's property which creates the requirement of a fenced area or coop containment.

With those two ordinances in place it is entirely possible for residents within the city limits to keep a small flock of live poultry in an urban friendly manner.

As you may have seen, many of the groups attempting to get chickens legalized have a pdf document of information. Here's a draft of one for us. If you're up for a read I'd like to have your input on it. I'll make any changes that are necessary and upload a new copy so we'll have something truly informative to send to the council members.

We'd like to take a moment to welcome each and every one of you. We would really like this to be an "US" kind of thing, so if you have any thing you want to share, any ideas, concerns, questions, comments, something you would like to discuss, jump right in, make yourself at home. Only one request, civility, as much as possible, any other differences go right out the window as we gather together for a common goal. That being said, let's have some fun, make some noise, and get back our feathered friends legalized status.

Did you see this in today's paper?
More proof that residents raising poultry is good for the community. We have a great many people in our community who would benefit from such donations now, as well as many others who would be able to do the same for themselves. The flock probably helped provide many delicious and nutritious meals. Thank you, Meals on Wheels PLUS, thank you, person who donated the chickens long ago, and thank you chickens, for providing good meals to those who otherwise might not have had.

Vin¿s People: Remembering a gift to Meals on Wheels PLUS that was really fowl.
