ADD YOUR VOICE: Disability Rights Matter

At Lighthouse Vision Loss Center, we believe people with disabilities have the right to live with independence, dignity, choice, and full participation in their communities.

Right now, those protections deserve our attention.

Florida remains one of only three states participating in Texas v. Kennedy, a lawsuit challenging regulations under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act—a federal civil rights law that protects people with disabilities from discrimination.

The outcome could impact protections that help people with disabilities and older adults receive the services and supports they need in their homes and communities, rather than being unnecessarily segregated or institutionalized.

This is a big deal for the disability community, and awareness matters.

Disability Rights Florida is calling on Florida to withdraw from the lawsuit, as 14 other states have already done.

📣 We invite you to join the voices and add yours.

Every step toward independence is worth celebrating. 💙

Pre-VR client Terry recently began Orientation & Mobility (O&M) training with Lighthouse O&M Specialist Latricia Gambrell. With Terry having recently moved into a new apartment building, one of his goals is to confidently and independently navigate his new surroundings.

During his very first lesson, Terry successfully traveled from his apartment, used the elevator to exit the building, and practiced locating the leasing office—all important steps toward greater independence.

At the end of the lesson, Terry shared how inspired he felt by the experience and how much he is looking forward to reaching the goals he has set for himself.

This is what O&M training is all about: building skills, confidence, and independence—one journey at a time. 👏💙

Way to go, Terry! We can't wait to see where your next lesson takes you.

We would like to express our gratitude to our dedicated staff members CEO Alex, Director Latricia, COMS Laura, and Social Worker Kaylin—for their invaluable time spent introducing themselves and sharing their insights with our parents. Parents also had the opportunity to observe a mini-Orientation and Mobility (O&M) lesson on using the white cane.

We are super excited to announce several new initiatives that will be happening this school year, all designed to foster independence, confidence, connection, and FUN for children with visual impairments!

🏠 Lighthouse House System – Building a culture of belonging, teamwork, character, and celebration.

💻 Accessibyte Virtual Learning – Offering an engaging virtual option to help students continue developing Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC) skills while meeting monthly program participation goals.

🥅 Goalball – Introducing students to a sport specifically designed for individuals who are blind or visually impaired, while enhancing teamwork, communication, and recreational skills.

🌱 Adaptive Gardening – Providing hands-on opportunities for students to explore gardening while developing independence, sensory skills, responsibility, and teamwork.

We look forward to a school year filled with learning, growth, connection, and opportunities for our students to shine! Teaching real-world independence through the Expanded Core Curriculum.

Investing in our team means investing in the people we serve. 💙

This week, our Director of Vocational Rehabilitation Services and Orientation & Mobility Specialist, Latricia Gambrell, is in Louisville, Kentucky attending the 2026 Association for Education & Rehabilitation of the Blind and Visually Impaired (AER) International Conference.

Throughout the week, Latricia is expanding her knowledge through educational sessions, earning continuing education credits, and collaborating with professionals from around the world to bring the latest best practices back to Lighthouse Vision Loss Center.

One exciting highlight? She had the opportunity to test the Glide, an innovative new orientation and mobility device currently in the pilot phase. We can't wait to see how emerging technologies like this continue to create new possibilities for individuals who are blind or living with vision loss.

Safe travels, Latricia, and thank you for your dedication to lifelong learning and excellence in serving our community!

🍕🥖 From Student to Employee... and Future Pastry Chef! 💙👩‍🍳✨

Today's cooking lesson started with a trip to Detwiler's Farm Market to shop for fresh ingredients—but the sweetest part of the day wasn't on our shopping list! ❤️🍪

Our Transition students surprised one of their own, Mercy, who has been working in the Detwiler's bakery for the past several months. Mercy proudly welcomed her classmates, gave them a behind-the-scenes look at the bakery, and shared what she's been learning in her role.

As a special treat, Mercy gave each of her classmates a delicious cookie that she helped bake herself! 🍪💛 Seeing the smiles on everyone's faces made the visit even more memorable and gave the students a chance to enjoy the results of Mercy's hard work.

Watching Mercy confidently interact with customers, answer her peers' questions, and take pride in her work was an incredible reminder of what work-based learning can accomplish.
Mercy has always dreamed of becoming a pastry chef, and this spring she'll be taking the next exciting step toward that dream by attending culinary school. 👩‍🍳🥐🎂

After visiting Mercy, the students completed their grocery shopping, practiced budgeting and independent purchasing skills, and returned to the Lighthouse to prepare homemade personal pizzas using the ingredients they selected themselves. 🍕🛒

We couldn't be prouder of you, Mercy! Thank you for inspiring your classmates and for sharing a little piece of your passion with each of them today. ❤️👏
