So, I was trying to come up with something to do with two of my Godsons as they both seemed stuck on their electronic devices all the time. A friend told me about The Little Free Library program and said, that looks like something you or your mom would do. At first, the boys were not interested, how could building something compare to the internet or YouTube?? I was like, how can YouTube compete with using tools! So from post it note to drawing on the floor, the project started. Almost immediately I know this was the thing to do. For those who knew mom, you know she had a passion for writing and reading, with a creative streak that was off the charts. I decided I would build this Little Free Library and dedicate to the memory and spirit of my mother, also known as “Moonglo” to so many. So on December 7th, 2019 the first piece of wood was cut. It took a few hours for Lucas to come investigate. He decided he would “chill” in my shop while I was working. I watched him watch me work on the project, then asked, do you want to help me? He flew off the couch and was right there. I discovered he had never been taught all the things I had been growing up. My father taught me all about tools, building and engineering at a very young age. I am pretty sure when I was his age (11) I was already soldering projects in my bedroom and putting circuit boards together. Not bad for the son of a Buster Brown Shoe salesman, lol. So Lucas and I started with the basics, going over safety and how things worked. Pretty soon he was sanding, drilling, screwing and priming the project. It took a few more days for his older brother Nate (13) to come out and ask if he could help. So while I can not hold their attention as long as those pesky electronic devices, I have opened a few doors...or windows for them to new ideas and activities. So the project is ever growing and ongoing. We received our National Charter Number from www.LittleFreeLibrary.org which will be mounted when library complete. We are hoping to be done in about a month or so, but as project moves forward, so does the ideas...so it keeps getting better and better. I will be posting pictures of the process and progress until we are done. The concept of book sharing is outstanding and am thrilled that someone may become a reader because of this undertaking. If even one person or child takes advantage, it will all be worth it. The time building with the boys, teaching them new skills that will help them later in life and maybe even expose them to a trade craft. So please stay tuned to our progress and share page with anyone you think may enjoy.
