Our intern this spring was Corri, a MSU student studying English writing and photography. We asked her to pick two of her favorite pieces from the new Catch and Release Exhibit, and tell us why she chose them:
Better to be Fishing by Brooke Wetzel, oil on panel
This piece reminds me of an ethereal Montana summer day. Although I can’t see our fly fisherwoman’s face, I can imagine the evening sun illuminating her skin. Wetzel showcases the softness of the light on the water, inspiring the viewer to meditate on the upcoming summer days.
Fischer River, MT (7/1/23) by Ben Miller, acrylic on polycarbonate
Miller’s technique, what he calls “Fly-Cast Painting,” is what fascinates me the most about this piece. Because he paints the backside of clear plexiglass, he must paint backwards. Everything is placed on the canvas in reverse order. The piece itself has a majestic energy to it, forcing me to look beyond the surface, searching for the last stroke of the fly that Miller makes.
