words by that feel like honey to the soul for student midwives and midwives alike:
"I saw a great video explaining the stages of learning the other day. It really got me thinking about where my students are at and even where I am at in my continuous midwifery journey. The stages are as follows…
Stage 1: Unconscious incompetence. You’re unaware you lack skill as well as unaware of what you need to know. You just started school and apprenticeship. Everything is so new and fun and exciting. Ignorance is bliss😆
Stage 2: Conscious incompetence. You have gotten your feet wet. You see the mountain you have to climb and it seems impossible. Everyday feels like 1 step forward 2 steps back. The amount of knowledge you feel like you need is suffocating. BUT you are piecing it together more than you know, day by day.
Stage 3: Conscious Competence. You have managed to keep climbing the mountain and can see how far you’ve come. You are beginning to feel like you know what you’re doing but it still takes a lot of work. Everything still feels really heavy but you are stronger than before.
Stage 4: Unconscious Competence. Midwifery is now second nature. You have an established flow and trust yourself. You don’t have as many holes and the ones you do have don’t scare you as much any more. You trust God, you trust birth and though it’s still heavy the burden has lightened.
When you’re a midwife you’re always learning but as a student it is so easy to feel defeated when you don’t know the answer or make a mistake. It is so important to be humble, stretch, grow and accept the process. GOD LOVES PROCESS. We grow closer to Him when we are the most vulnerable. To learn and be studious is a blessing. I pray all of our students find encouragement today as you navigate this weighty season. You were born to do this.
“Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light."
