The Big Sky Workshop on the Economics of Agriculture and the Environment returns to Bozeman this summer.

Hosted by Montana State University and PERC, the workshop brings together leading scholars to share research at the intersection of agriculture, land use, and the environment.

We’re pleased to welcome our 2026 keynote speaker, Aaron Smith, Gordon Rausser Distinguished Chair in the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics at UC Berkeley.

Counting elk sounds simple, until you have thousands of camera trap photos to sort through by hand.

PERC’s elk occupancy agreements compensate ranchers for providing habitat to migrating elk. Historically, measuring elk presence required meticulously reviewing and counting wildlife manually.

Today, new technology is helping to identify and count elk, making it faster and easier to verify wildlife on private lands.

Better information means lower monitoring costs, more efficient conservation programs, and more time spent focusing on what matters most: keeping working lands and wildlife thriving together.

PERC kicked off the mother of all summer road trips this month, releasing new research from the Pacific Northwest to the old-growth forests of Maine, convening leaders up in Yellowstone to explore the future of national park stewardship, making a quick jaunt to D.C. to testify before Congress, and finally returning back home to Montana to honor our late friend and conservation legend Ted Turner.

Buckle up for a big summer ahead. You’re invited to join us at every step of the way, starting with these highlights from May.

Hailing from the ‘best side’ of the Tetons (although she knows that’s a hot take) Crys Moorsman brings both top-notch bird calls and enthusiasm to PERC’s development team.

Crys studied biology at Grinnell College, volunteered for conservation organizations across six countries, and worked on the trail crew at Rocky Mountain National Park.

We’re so glad our resident bird nerd migrated to Bozeman.

Maine’s last mature forests are rare, ecologically valuable, and largely unprotected.

A new report from PERC, the University of Maine, and Harvard Forest identifies over 400,000 acres of mature forest in northern and western Maine. The problem: roughly 75% remains vulnerable to harvest.

With 95% of Maine’s forests privately owned, top-down mandates won’t cut it. The research points to a better path: voluntary tools like targeted land acquisition and harvest deferrals that align ecological goals with economic incentives.

The 10 largest forest patches could be protected for approximately $16 million. That’s not a regulatory burden. That’s a market opportunity.

What does the future of America’s national parks look like? This month, PERC brought together park superintendents, researchers, and policy leaders in Yellowstone to tackle that big question.

From record visitation and aging infrastructure to employee housing, technology, and long-term stewardship, this workshop focused on practical solutions to some of the parks system’s biggest challenges.

Participants toured Yellowstone’s flood-damaged north entrance and smart new employee housing projects, both real-world examples of the challenges and opportunities facing our parks today.

A theme that stood out? The people closest to these landscapes often know their needs best. Good stewardship means giving park leaders the tools, flexibility, and support to solve problems on the ground.

America’s best idea deserves innovative stewardship.
