Big news for America’s hunters and anglers.

The Department of the Interior () has proposed the largest expansion of hunting and fishing opportunities in U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service history — opening or expanding access across 111 refuges and hatcheries in 32 states.

If finalized, more than 92 million acres — over 95% of National Wildlife Refuge System lands — would be available for hunting.

Hunters and anglers are among the strongest supporters of conservation in North America, contributing billions annually to wildlife management, habitat restoration, and rural communities.

We appreciate , Brian Nesvik, and the Administration’s commitment to expanding public access, supporting state-led wildlife management, and protecting our outdoor heritage for future generations.

SHEEP FEVER EPISODE 94 | ND Bighorns with Brett Wiedmann and Kevin Hurley

They trace the efforts from early translocation failures to the successful introduction of Missouri River Breaks sheep from Montana. These hardy sheep shared similarities to the extirpated Audubon subspecies, which once lived in North Dakota. Brett gives a gives a history of bighorns in the state, he and Kevin discuss that successful introduction, and they both share an update on where bighorn sheep restoration and hunting stands in North Dakota today.

Did you know…

A recent study by of the Desert Bighorn Council utilizing advanced GPS collars and video cameras suggests that desert bighorn sheep rely heavily on alcoves and caves for protection from the desert sun during summer months.

The findings from this research could be groundbreaking in helping wild sheep managers better plan and place water guzzlers on the landscape.

A new feature article by outdoor journalist is live on the WSF website!

In December of 2024, desert bighorn sheep were released into Franklin Mountains State Park near El Paso, Texas. Nearly 600 citizens gathered to witness the groundbreaking return.

Months before this monumental moment, crews from and WSF were busy moving across the range with tanks, pipe, and concrete–building water guzzlers to greet the new arrivals.

Now, through the use of trail cameras, these guzzlers are giving biologists an inside look inside the daily lives of one of Texas’ most iconic creatures.
