The Wilderness Ministry Institute equips indigenous Christian youth leaders with wilderness skills, so that young people globally may have a transformative encounter with Jesus Christ in the outdoors.

Back in early September, our WMI Director, Joel Vermillion, met with a few European leaders in the far north of Finland to be in God's creation and encourage one another in the work that they are doing. These leaders are heavily involved in the work of discipling young people all over Europe and are using wilderness experiences as a vehicle to spread the gospel.

Pray for these leaders as they continue to faithfully proclaim God's word to young people.

Our Ambassador to Central Asia describes his heart for the region: to come to know Christ and to use wilderness as a tool to do that. The Lord is on the move in this region of the world, and we cannot wait to see what the coming years have in store!

"Your steadfast love, O Lord, extends to the heavens,
your faithfulness to the clouds.
Your righteousness is like the mountains of God;
your judgments are like the great deep;
man and beast you save, O Lord." - Psalm 36:5-6

As we spend time in creation let us not lose sight of our good and righteous and holy God. He shows us these truths about himself through creation but is so much higher and better than his created world.

Our WMI Director Joel Vermilion ( ) shares a teachable moment from Jeremiah 2 in our online course, filmed in the beautiful Snowy Range of southern Wyoming. In it, he describes how we often strive toward God rather than receiving the gift of His grace—like digging a well when a clear, clean lake is directly in front of you.

God’s creation is a wonderful classroom!

We wholeheartedly believe that using God's creation as a teaching tool is found all over scripture. From Christ's parables to God bringing the Israelites into the wilderness, this is a classroom like no other!

God has given us the beauty to turn the hearts of people to himself and then to reveal himself through his word. We love to explore this reality alongside the local church and engage in deep discipleship with leaders who are seeking something more.

Romans 1:20 "For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse."

In July, our Media Specialist, Ellis Holcombe, made a visit to Central Asia to visit our full-time staff member there. While in country, they had the opportunity to take some local youth on a backpacking trip.

Stay tuned for an update from our staff member in Central Asia.

In June, our Latin American Coordinator, Efra Arguello, visited leaders in Colombia to teach and encourage them in their ministry. It was a great time to meet with leaders he has been connected to for years and to make new connections.

Pray for more opportunities to continue to preach the gospel using the tool of wilderness in this region!

A couple of weeks ago, our team gathered together along with our spouses in central Oregon to be mutually encouraged by one another and to cast vision for the next year in WMI. It was a sweet time of fellowship, relaxation, study, and prayer. We all left with our hearts full and ready to continue the work that God has called us to.

This time is essential to keep going in our work; we need each other, we need community in order to be united in the gospel and ready for when times get tough. Thank God for opportunities to be together with our coworkers in the gospel.

This month, our Asia Coordinator and one of Nexus International’s Vice Presidents traveled to Mauritius to continue investing in a growing disciple-making movement through one of our Nexus Ambassadors and his church plant.

Across the island, there is a growing hunger among young leaders for deeper discipleship, healthy community, and a more intentional way of following Jesus. During the trip, they helped facilitate a day of training that gathered youth leaders from a variety of churches and ministry contexts across Mauritius to explore what it means to live as disciples who make disciples.

We are deeply encouraged by the vision, faithfulness, and potential of the Church in Mauritius, and grateful to continue walking alongside leaders who are investing in the next generation and helping cultivate a lasting culture of disciple-making on the island.

Last month, our Latin America Coordinator, Efra Argüello, met up with friends and partners to encourage them in ministry and sharpen skills to use God's creation to proclaim his word.

It was a fruitful time of deepening relationships as we continue to develop leaders in this region. We are grateful for what the Lord is doing and are so excited to see what comes next!
