National Police Week is celebrated to honor the brave men and women who put their lives on the line in order to protect our communities. We also remember and pay tribute to the officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

Supporting law enforcement isn’t optional: It’s a necessity.

Safe communities depend on strong partnerships between officers and the leaders who stand behind them. I am honored to have the support of these brave men and women in my race for County Attorney.

Thank you to every law enforcement officer, past, present or future for your sacrifice and service to our community!

In October of 2025, Marley Ndoumy-K entered a guilty plea as part of a plea agreement. She was originally charged with negligent homicide after the fatal shooting of her fiancé in December of 2023. She has since then been convicted of Criminal Endangerment as part of the plea agreement.

A man lost his life. The final outcome? Six years deferred — meaning if conditions are met, the felony can ultimately be wiped away. Restitution was ordered, but no prison sentence.

When a death results in supervision and paperwork instead of incarceration, it is hard to call that justice.

Our community deserves accountability that reflects the value of a human life. This outcome is deeply disappointing — and raises serious questions about the decisions made by the Gallatin County Attorney’s Office.

A life was taken and the consequences should have reflected that.

Tens of thousands in fines are already racking up, and the city could lose state funds from the coal board and other funding sources.

Our association is deeply concerned that our County Attorney chose to leave the state for political matters while serious issues here at home remain unresolved. At a time when our community needs leadership, accountability, and presence, local responsibilities should come first.

This is not about politics—it’s about priorities. The people of this county deserve a County Attorney who is focused on what is happening in our community, not elsewhere. We urge our elected officials to remain present, engaged, and committed to the responsibilities they were elected to uphold.

On January 20, 2026, a coroner’s inquest was held to examine the circumstances surrounding the officer-involved shooting that occurred near 19th and Oak Street in October 2024.

The loss of life in this situation was tragic for all involved, including Tristyn Newman’s family, the Bozeman Police officers and Gallatin County Sheriff’s deputies who responded to this event. On behalf of the Bozeman Police Department and our officers, we offer our deepest condolences to the family.

We firmly stand by the actions of our officers, which have been thoroughly reviewed both internally and externally. In addition to a full internal investigation by the Bozeman Police Department, the actions of law enforcement were comprehensively investigated by the Department of Criminal Investigation, a division of the Montana Department of Justice. Additionally, a full day of evidence regarding the actions of law enforcement was presented to jurors during yesterday’s public Coroner’s Inquest. Each of the previously referenced reviews reached the same conclusion; the officers responded appropriately, lawfully and within policy to the threat of imminent harm posed by Tristyn Newman.

Throughout the encounter, Ms. Newman presented a serious and imminent threat to the public, to herself and to the responding law enforcement officers. She had committed an assault with a weapon earlier that evening, had made statements about killing another family member, and had taken steps toward doing so. She was also located in a very public location with an open store nearby. Once she was observed and contacted, law enforcement officers could not allow her to leave due to the threats she had made, the crime she had committed, and the ongoing threat she posed to the public due to her being armed with a firearm. Our crisis negotiators spent hours of prolonged and significant efforts to de-escalate the situation and convince her to put the firearm down and surrender. Ultimately, she refused to surrender peacefully despite the law enforcement officers’ repeated efforts to engage with her and reach a peaceful resolution.

We recognize the situation was and is upsetting for all involved and the outcome may be difficult to accept, but we are committed to transparency and accountability and believe the entire investigative process was conducted thoroughly and comprehensively.

BPPA held a fundraiser back in October and November to raise money for the Cancer Support Community Bozeman. During that time, officers displayed pink name plates and badges while working. Chief Veltkamp also allowed officers to grow beards and have pink nail polish to show our support. We ended up raising a total of $2,000! 💅🩷
