The Great Dane Sanctuary

The Great Dane Sanctuary The dream of many Dane lovers is to have a place where the old, ill and aggressive Danes can live out their lives with love and dignity. License # 266896

The Great Dane Sanctuary is a place for unadoptable pure bred Great Danes to live out their lives in a safe, secure, happy, healthy and loving environment being cared for until their very last day. It is the only sanctuary of its kind in the U.S. and accepts dogs from all over the country. Land and buildings, known as the Dane Farm, have been donated to the Great Dane Sanctuary. The Danes here hav

e acres of woods to play in, get to come in the house, have their own furniture to lay around on, and are only kenneled at night and for meals. Our Kennel Manager, Jessie, spends 40+ hours a week getting the dogs fed, taken for walks, cleaning up the kennels, and loving each dog as if it were her own. Outside of routine care, Jessie works with our danes to overcome aggressive behaviors, gains trust, provides stability and structure, and helps them really learn to live in a pack safely. She has the help of a few staff members who watche over the dogs on nights and weekends to ensure the dogs are kenneled for a limited amount of time. A sanctuary is not a rescue. We do not adopt out any dogs, but rather keep them safe, secure and as healthy as we can on the Dane Farm for the full length of their lives. The Danes that come up to the Dane Farm are un-adoptable due to temperament, illness, and/or old age. Some of the dogs have been court ordered to be euthanized or come to our farm, others would have been euthanized by their owners because they had no other choice. We currently can take in a total of 12 Great Danes at a time, we love the fact that we can save these gentle giants but wish we could save more. With the time and money that it takes to keep the Sanctuary open and running, we are always in need of financial help, as the Sanctuary runs solely on donations and grants. Please consider giving a tax-deductible gift to the Great Dane Rescue of MN & WI, who co-owns the property, and make a note that your donation is pledged to The Great Dane Sanctuary. With expenses exceeding $3000/month just to operate, no amount is too small.

Mocha's been living at the Sanctuary and while she's living a wonderful life here, it's still not a home.

We are now seeking a Permanent Foster home. We provide the food and meds, you provide the couch and extra love!

Reintroducing Mocha šŸ’œ
A soft, soulful girl looking for her person (or family)

Mocha is 7 years old with the gentlest heart and the kind of presence that just melts into you. She absolutely adores people. Whether you’ve known her forever or just met her, she’ll greet you with quiet trust and affection. She is deeply loving, calm, and happiest when she’s close to her humans.

This sweet girl has been through more than her fair share. She was found wandering the streets and has since had surgery to remove benign tumors. And yet… she remains one of the most tender, easygoing souls you’ll meet.

Right now, Mocha is living in our Sanctuary. She is safe and cared for; but it’s not a home. And what she truly deserves is a couch, a routine, and people to call her own.

✨ We are looking for a Permanent Foster (or adoptive home) for Mocha. ✨

This means Mocha lives with you as your dog, while the rescue covers her special food and medications for life.

She does have some medical needs (a strict low-fat diet + multiple small meals daily), so she’ll need someone home most of the day and a calm, consistent environment.

She’s not asking for much… just a quiet place, a soft spot to land, and someone to love.

We know her person is out there. We just need to find them.

Please share to help Mocha get home šŸ’œ

If you're not able to take her in, please consider Sponsoring her and our other Adoptable Danes at The Great Dane Sanctuary via our Patreon- https://www.patreon.com/c/gdromn/membership

This morning, we said goodbye to another beloved member of our Sanctuary family. šŸ’”

Ella was one of those quiet souls you may not have heard much about — our devoted little mouser who kept the mice at bay so the dogs could play, and who wasn’t afraid to remind them of their manners when necessary.

She welcomed human visitors with affection, peacefully coexisted with the dogs, and shared a particularly special bond with Ollie, one of our longest-standing Sanctuary residents.

It appears that Ella passed in her sleep, peacefully — the kind of goodbye we all hope for, even though it never makes it easier.

Our hearts are with our Sanctuary team today. As they continue to grieve the recent loss of Rufus, having to say goodbye to sweet Ella has made this holiday season especially heavy.

Please keep our team in your thoughts as they navigate these tender moments of love and loss.

Run free, Ella.

It’s that time of year! And while Cash passed away this year, we’ll continue to post this story because it’s so, so important—

With the hustle and bustle of the holidays near, I want to remind you to be an advocate for your dog. To not only keep your family and friends safe but to keep your dog safe.

Meet Cash. I’ve had him his whole life, he grew up with my niece and my nephews around all the time. A handful of Christmas’s ago he snipped at my nephew, I thought it was a one time thing but he did it again on New Years.

I should have watched his signs, I should have listened to him, I should have been more careful. But honestly I didn’t even think it would happen. This could be you.

Your dog can be great 100% of the time, your dog could have done amazing last year and the year before. But maybe this year your dog is hurting, or maybe this year your dog isn’t feeling well, maybe this year it’s one more kid added to the mix, maybe this year your nieces boyfriend is odd, maybe this year is just different.

Please. I’m begging you. Put your dog away. Give your dog space. Watch for signs of being uncomfortable or upset. Watch for other humans behaviors around your dog. I know you want him/her to be included in all things but it’s not always what is best for them.

It’s this time of year that more bites happen, and not everyone is capable of working through the trauma that a bite can bring. I was devastated but have changed my lifestyle. The sanctuary doesn’t have room for more bites, rescues can’t take bite histories, the rescues are also full as it is.

I know you know your dog. I thought I did too. Don’t wait for something to go wrong, so please, leave your dog home, put them away, or be an advocate and give them space.

You think it won’t happen to you. But it might. It did to me.

We lost a great one last night 😭

Rufus came to us in Spring of 2019. He was rescued by a wonderful family when they saw him in a shelter sick with severe pneumonia and underweight. After nursing him back to health he struggled with visitors and had many bite attempts. So we took him under our wing and gave him the best damn life.

Last night he suddenly refused to get up and was gagging up foam- yep our worst nightmare- bloat.

He was rushed to the ER, but he did have a bad case of torsion, being that he is around 10-11 years old, and struggling with different arthritis issues, we decided surgery wasnt in the cards and let him go.

Rufus was an anxious guy who LOVED attention from our team. He was reserved but when he loved, man he loved hard.

He was the first one to snag treats not so gracefully while maybe grabbing a finger, would greet Meg by ramming his head between her legs so hard he’d push her against the wall, for his morning pets. He would always push others out of the way for extra snugs and scratches. The Sanctuary felt extra quiet this morning without him and hes already incredibly missed.

Rufus’ family was greatly involved in his life and supported us endlessly. We are so grateful that they trusted us with him for his last 6 years, that’s love and responsibility that you just don’t see often.

Run free sweet boy! There are so, so many sanctuary friends waiting for you on the other side. Thank you for letting us love you all these years ā¤ļø

It's Giving Tuesday so what better day than to start a fundraising campaign and while we are in much need of funds, we are also in need of food!

So here's our ask:
- Consider monetary donations right to paypal, venmo, or through this campaign
- Consider sending one bag of food our way
- OR Consider starting an autoship order for us! We go through approximately 3-4 bags of food a month with Mocha needing a special diet. If just 3-5 people decide to send a monthly autoship for the year, we'd be set!

Lets do this!!

A Holiday Poem, by Gordy

To destroy in just days.
We have tons of blankets
Until they’re all frayed.
But what would be fine
Is some nommy got eats.
So we can have dinner

These are the direct links to the foods we feed here at the kennel. We especially need the Blue Buffalo canned for Mocha. Everyone loves these U.S. made, 100% digestible bully sticks, too! šŸŽ„

We also accept donations for food and treats.

Hey all it’s Melissa here! Where has this year gone?! I’ve missed my besties and finally got to spend some time with them this morningā¤ļøā¤ļø. It was my first time interacting with Pixie and Mocha🄰. They are such loves; Pixie is a ball of beautiful energy, and Mocha is the sweetest, gentle giant! It was such a perfect morning with all of them! Have a great week!
