Highlights of the 1954 Boxford Annual Report: The new Harry Lee Cole school was named and Boxford installed its first-ever stop signs! It's hard to believe people were driving through town into the mid-1950s without a single stop sign anywhere.

This is the most exciting accession the Document Center has had in a while! It is a diary kept by Mary Ann Peabody from 1841 until her death in 1865 (with very few entries in later years). The diary starts as she is finishing up high school, and she soon moves on to a career in teaching. Many diaries from this time period are very brief or dry, but Mary was a wonderful writer who shares her life with a great sense of humor!

These are some of her shorter entries about teaching. The school examination was an annual visit by the School Committee, mainly intended to assess a teacher's performance, which was rated on how well her students knew their lessons and how well she managed the children's behavior in the classroom. We actually have the School Committee report from this year at the Document Center, and it turns out she did a great job with the kids and didn't need to be so stressed over the examination!

I commenced teaching school in District No. two. I have Forty-two scholars, board at Major Perley's. I have a very difficult school to discipline.

Next Thursday, my school is examined. What an awful occasion! May I escape without broken bones or many flesh wounds.

Don't miss the Revolutionary Tea Party this Sunday! In addition to some wonderful sweet and savory treats, I will be speaking about some incredible local history, including my original research on an enslaved man who lived in Boxford and ended up fighting in the Revolutionary War. This is a "hidden history" story that has never been told before!

This event will take place at the Boxford Community Center at 10 Elm on Sunday, May 17th, at 2:30. Tickets available here:

Another where is it Wednesday! These were taken in the spring of 1980.

A wonderful portrait captured in a snapshot, this photograph comes from a Cole-Pratt family photo album at the Boxford Historic Document Center.

New accession at the Boxford Historic Document Center! This photograph of the packed train station on Depot Road must have been taken at the end of a successful "Boxford outing" day. This photograph was taken in the early 1900s when Boxford was often the site of large picnic gatherings and also military parades and demonstrations put on by the Massachusetts Volunteer Militia at the summer training campground on Ipswich Road.

ETA: I actually started tracing back the donor's genealogy today and figured it out! This anvil belonged to John H. Nason, who opened a shop on Brook Road sometime in the 1870s and worked there until his death in 1913.
