Bravery Basket Food Pantry is an early-stage nonprofit being developed in Rapid City, South Dakota, with a mission to reduce food insecurity among military families, veterans, and children in the Black Hills region.
Rapid City is home to Ellsworth Air Force Base and one of the largest concentrations of veterans in South Dakota. Including military personnel and families, the base community represents roughly 8,000 people, while the surrounding region is home to an estimated 7,000–10,000 veterans. Many families connected to military service face periods of financial instability due to relocation, deployment cycles, medical issues, and rising living costs. At the same time, more than 113,000 people across South Dakota experience food insecurity, with children representing a significant portion of those affected.
Bravery Basket is building a full-service food pantry designed to meet these needs by providing shelf-stable foods, refrigerated items, and frozen foods so families have access to healthier and more complete food options. The pantry is being designed to serve as a reliable community resource for military families, veterans, and other local households experiencing temporary hardship.
