What began as a social club, named for the noted African-American scientist, became an organization concerned with the social, cultural, educational and recreational needs of the community. Located on 201 Ce
nter Street, the Carver Center sponsored Girl and Boy Scout troops, 4-H programs, after school activities, as well as a meeting place for various community events for adults. When City officials requested the Carver Center move to a lot on State Street to make way for business development, Carver Center members complied. After years at this new location, subsequent research revealed that the land had been designated for African-American use by the founders of Bowling Green in 1802. School closings, the dwindling residential population and an increase in-school after-school programs brought changes to the Carver Center. Its previous programs were no longer sustainable. Therefore, Carver Center members focused on developing other programs such as an academic assistance program, activities for seniors and providing a meeting place for those in need. Various organizations, families and small groups have used the Carver Center for activities such as business presentations, bridal showers, and Thanksgiving dinners. Today , the George Washington Carver Center continues to be an integral part of Bowling Green's Shake Rag district as it expands its services to meet the needs of a growing and diverse community.
